What do you think is the reason why people pursue a Masters degree or a Ph.D?

somehow, our society is unfortunately categorized and characterized by titles and ranks. many people earn titles in different ways. others by names and heritage. others by wealth and marriage. few do it by excelling in some sports and showbiz. these ranks and titles commands prestige. and one way of having it is earning a higher degree. aside from that title, it also specializes on something worthwhile. it can be for understanding of something. besides, having MA and/or PhD makes one earn more.

I agree. I think having greater education pays later. More position will be opened for those who are over qualified and they can also get a higher paying job. But does a routine kind of job which pays more really worth that MA or PhD? What do you think is the best job for those people?

well stated mensab! Couldn't agree with you more! Our society is definitely categorized and characterized by titles and ranks. It is unfortunate because there are many who may be just as qualified for the jobs given to those with a "higher" education- they just don't have the "credentials" behind their name. Someone here mentioned most inventors were drop outs!! I find it quite interesting as I believe that Einstein himself only finished the 9th grade of that. ....I'll have to do more research on it...but I'm sure there are/were more than just him who accomplished alot WITHOUT the so-called "higher" education needed!

It seems a Bachelors degree is for getting a job, It seems a Masters degree is for jobs that are too complicated for those with only a Bachelors degree. It seems a Ph.D is for jobs that are too complicated for those with only a Masters degree - such as the unsolved problems of the world , perhaps? What do you think ?

I think a skilled undergrad can solve complicated problems. Many inventors are school drop out. What I really think is that, having higher education can increase the credentials of the person and can even be granted the most freedom in the field of study because of such recognition.

Higher Education. Most of my teachers at my school who are teaching in the Bachelor's Degree program are working on their Masters and one of them is working on a Ph. D. Some of them went that route because they wanted to teach more classes and having that extra degree makes them extra qualified.

Aside from being in academics, have you ever thought of another job for those who pursue higher education?
