Do You Fear God?

Malachi 3:16(Young's Literal Translation)says: "Then have those fearing Jehovah spoken one to another, And Jehovah doth attend and hear, And written is a book of memorial before Him Of those fearing Jehovah, And of those esteeming His name." What does it mean to fear God? Is it the kind of fear we feel for criminals, or is it a healthy fear, as we fear to displease him like we would do to a loving parent? What are we supposed to do to be one of those who will be written in the book of memorial? You can also go to the biblegateway.com and compare American Standard Version and other translations if you wish. What do You Think?? Welcome with comments.

Yes, urban, I agree too.. If we respect someone, we don´t want to say anything that hurts him. And we can show our love to God by deeply respecting Him and obeying Him as all the laws in the Bible are for our own good. Thank you both for the responses..

hello there! I think the fear e are talking about here is not that kind of fear that e feel when there's danger around or fear for criminals or whatsoever...its a kind of fear that is divine. i think we should keep this divine fear with us because it will stop us or will hold us back from doing things that we know are against God's will and displeases Him. In my opinion and according to my faith, to be one of those who are written in the book of memorial, we should have faith and act upon it. actually, everything is written in the bible and it has teaches us how we can be saved come judgement day. all of this are just my opinion and i am speaking for myself.

Yes ckyera, You have many good points there. And doing God´s will must be the best for us as he always wants us to be happy. We actually have a chance to be written in the book of memorial right now that we are talking to each other and learning from this kind of contact. One important thing I learned from this scripture is that we should use the divine name Jehovah when we talk about our Heavenly Father.

Yeah, I do fear God and as you mentioned in the right way, to gain his approval and not to displease or hurt him in any way. Fear of God involves a fear to be righteous and right and try to do what pleases him the most, not coz' we fear of something bad happening to us if we don't, but that we love him and do not want to coz' him hurt.

I don't fear god because god is not scared of me. I am confident in my mind that I am not doing anything wrong. Whatever people say I stay still in my mind even though physically I am conforming to what people do. The bible is old and thats where history comes from. In the old days these words might have meant something else. It is not exactly how it sounds now or even mean the same. These things usually have a deeper meaning than you can think or as simple as it says. Don't take it literally you will just get lost because people have different views. Your just complicating your life with these questions. I don't know how to answer your questions because I'm not that good with translations. I'm puzzled with these things as well but I don't bother myself because there is usually one answer.

Why did you even bother asking when you know the answer? Anyway, I think that words can mean anything, even in a story like the bible. I mean words can mean anything. I agree with you. jativo thanks for that word of wisdom but I'm really not as concerned as other people are. Thank you again.

It is always interesting to learn what others think. And it can also give a wider perspective of the subject. Thanks for your thoughts..

Do you fear Anubis? Seth? Thoth? How about Shiva? How about living in ignorance and suffering for countless lives, like the Buddha says you will, unless you find enlightenment? Personally I think the Bible is hogwash, even more so than the ancient pantheons of the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. But feel free to continue living in fear, I'm sure it's very productive :D

Well, you are free to think and believe what you want. I am happy that I learned to know the God of the Bible already when I was a child, so I have never been scared of false teachings like hellfire, that are so common in many religions. I see my Creator as a loving Father and choose to do good to others as he is teaching us. Everyone is free to compare different religions and see what makes sense. No other God has sent me anyone to teach about them, except Jehovah and we are all free to ask His servants for proof that He really exists and that His Word has proved to be true. But that is entirely up to you if you want to do that. Thanks for your response!!

So then are you a believer ? Do you believe strongly in Jesus ? I mean do you believe like the Bible tells you that you should ? Does the Bible confirm your strong belief ? Hint: check Mark 16:17 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+16:17-18&version=KJV

Hi, bluebiru and welcome to myLot It is great that you too feel like God is your special friend. He is our Father, so we are a part of his family and as you say, his instructions are for our best. It is for this reason I love and respect my heavenly Father and I am convinced that the word fear in the Bible verse you read here, means a healthy fear - a deep respect like we would feel to our parents who teach us what is right. Thanks for your comment..

I don't fear God because I don't know if I believe in God. How can you fear something if you are not sure if you believe it?

I can understand you.. If you - in the future - learn to know the God the Bible talks about, you will find that he is a loving Father and the only fear we should feel is to make him sad with our way of life and our choices. He loves us very much and wants our best, and he knows what is best for us so we have every reason to love him too. Of course he will not permit the evil forever, so those who do evil things on purpose have all reason to fear the day he will clean the earth from all that is bad. Why not ask him for help to find out if he really exists? Welcome to send me a message if you would like to ask something.

I understand you are one of those who love God and fear to make Him sad - as He loves us very much. If you follow the Bible, you will not need to be afraid of the day when God will clean the earth from all violence and evil. Wish you a wonderful day!

Yes we should fear God. IF we have fear of God there will be no reason for us to fear the mess that is happening all around us, because we will be assured that he will take care of us.

Hi, nancy I guess you mean that we should respect God - that should be one way to start talking to each other even if we have different views of things. As we have the Bible in common, we could all learn more about our loving Creator.

I fear the unknown , not god in particuar. When i think of the afterlife i get chills as it is unknown to what exactly happens when our brains ceace to function.I have great hope and desire to life eternally with god in heaven and beleave in chist like any other christian. In my mind though i can't help but wonder what really happens when we die.We are on a planet that revolves around a star know as the sun in an infinitely expanding universe.Who knows what other life could exist in millions of lightyears of open space. And where would heaven exist , would it exist in this universe , if not where one earth would it be another universe? So many questions, most unsolvable and we can only find out when we die.Quite proplexing stuff!

I understand you, SilverKing There are so many different thoughts one can have about what will happen when we die and about the future. But we have a great possibility to find out about the truth. The Almighty Creator who made the universe and the earth has the ability to listen to prayers. He wants to help us and has always been willing to teach us his plan for us. During the time I have studied the Bible, for several decades, I have found that it gives the most comforting and satisfying answers to our questions. I found a great article about how the truth will set us free, and that also means free from fear of what will happen to us. http://www.watchtower.org/e/19981001/article_01.htm You can also go to the home page and make a search for the answers to questions you might have. Welcome to send me a message if you have more questions.

Yes, winstonbaltazar this kind of fear can protect us just as a healthy fear would prevent us from crossing a road with heavy traffic with the red light burning. Thanks for your response!

Are you from Jehovah's witness? I am a pure Roman Catholic. And yes, I fear God. It's a healthy fear because fear of him is fear to do something bad. Doing good things to other people is very, very important. And I believe on that golden rule, "Don't do unto others what you don't want others do unto you."

Hi, ZeXyRech, and welcome to myLot!! Yes, I am a Christian Jehovah´s Witness since about 50 years - and I like to talk to people with different religions as I have found many honest persons who are searching the truth. We can always learn something from one another. Many respect the Bible and want to follow the teaching of our loving Creator. I see that you are one of them. Have a great day, and welcome to send me questions if you want to!

I fear God as the way a child would fear a father that they love. I do not want to displease Him because that would cause Him pain and disappointment but He will still love me because He made me imperfect. He is pleased when I overcome my baser nature and become more spiritual and closer to Him. I do not fear God will punish me but I do know that He will allow things to happen that will teach me, the same as an earthly father would discipline a child by letting them suffer the consequences of their actions. I do not fear Hell because no loving father would do that to their child--that is an old threat to keep people in line and disguise the loving and disciplinary nature of God, a tool to control a pastor's flock and keep them meek and fearful. Surely those clergy will be punished the way an earthy father would seek revenge on someone who lied to his own child about him, making him a hideous monster when all he intends to do is love the child.

Hi, dragon You have a very interesting view of this and I agree with you - I guess you also believe that God made the first humans perfect, but they lost the perfection when they sinned against their Father. And you are right, God would never torture his children. That teaching about the hellfire is false. People have interpreted symbols to something literal but sincere study of the Bible reveals the truth about this. Thanks for your response.

Yes, Hatley That is the way. We try our best and pray for wisdom to learn more about God´s will for us. As Proverbs 1:7 says: "Fear of Jehovah [is] a beginning of knowledge, Wisdom and instruction fools have despised!" (Young's Literal Translation) We know who is giving the true knowledge. God will answer our prayers if we ask for wisdom from Him.

Yes, sometimes I really do. I'm not sure that I have a grasp on religion. There are so many, and they contradict each other. But God himself is on my mind quite often. And yes, I fear him, and his judgment of me. I fall short of him every day, and I know it. All I can do is hope that he can see his way to forgive me.

Hi, zionsphere, You seem to have a real wish to please God, and as you have that, you can pray for wisdom and that He will show you the way He wants you to go. The angels have often lead God´s servants to those who sincerely search the truth. Welcome send me a message if you have questions.
