Why won't my cat stay in my room?

Every night I put my cats in my room, I have the litter box in my room and I sleep with the door shut, I keep a cup of food in my cabinet and feed them a little bit before I go to sleep, every night one of the cats scratch at my door until she gets it open (which she just did, I was angry so slammed the door shut when she left and now I'm typing on here) I have two questions: Why won't she stay and how do I keep her from scratching at the door without hitting her on the head or hurting her?

If you shut the cats inside your bedroom; they will want to get out. If you lock them out, they will want to come in. Why not leave the door ajar so they can come and go as they please without bothering you? Is there a reason they need to be in your room with you at night? Because if there isn't a good reason, it seems to be a situation you can easily avoid.

I agree with ambercatherine, cats are nocturnal, they alive and kicking during the night. Just let her be for now. You really won't be able to keep her on the room for an hour or so. If you want, you make a place for where she can do something else. Sort out a toy that she really likes and make a place for her to do so without disturbing you on your sleep. They really would like to do something during the night.

I think cats are more nocturnal. they sleep most of the day away and like to explore at night- because quite frankly they can see extremely well at night so why not? Well thin about it.. if you slept all day and now found yourself awake adn trapped in a little room where nothing exciting was going on.. what would you want to do? Why, look for a way out of course. and you cat must be very smart to be able to open a closed door..
Mine, pulled at the bottom until they actually broke the (cheap plywood) door and now they have their own little "MOUSE HOLE" in the door. So I can't keep them trapped even if I wanted to. Only the biggest cats can't fit under the door.. lol

Hi sxpython2222,
your cats may not want to be confided to one space, which could mean that they are claustrophobic. After all, they are creatures who like to wonder around and hunt for prey. Maybe if you left the bedroom door ajar where the cats can come and go as they pleases, this would solve the problem of where they will be willing to sleep.
What is your reason for locking the cats in with you at night? Do they go out of the cat hole and roam the neighborhood? or tear up the furniture? If there is not really good reason, why not set them free. As long as you, lovingly, hold them hostage in your room, you will lose sleep and stay annoyed. Freeing your cats at night is a good idea, don't you think?

My cat used to do the exact same thing. Of course she never got out of the room, she just ripped the carpet out from under the door and I had to keep fixing the carpet or replacing it. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot you can do, cats will be where they want to be. Unlike dogs, cats tend to not want to be where you want them to be. It's all a matter of convenience for them.

Maybe your cat likes to go out at night or she wants to go to bathroom, maybe. My last cat never stayed at home, she only got back home to eat then she kept going out for fun. But sadly, when she was going out, somebody kidnap her, I never met her again since then

Cats, I have found, are very independent creatures. Most of them don't feel the need to sleep with you as a dog would. Also, they are nocturnal and like to roam the house during the night. If they can usually get out of your room during the day they will also want to at night. My suggestion is to sleep with you door open to avoid you cat scratching on the door at night. If that isn't possible a good way to keep a cat from doing anything they aren't suppose to is get a small squirt bottle and squirt them every time they do something they aren't suppose to. My cat doesn't even wait for me to spray it anymore because when she sees it in my hand she runs from the room. The best of luck to you and your night walker.
