I hate it when people assume because you are heavy...

that you eat a lot or only eat junk food. Over the past few years I kept gaining weight even though my diet did not change. I tried exercising before I started having health problems and tried eating less. I cut out junk food. I did not drink pop for awhile. Every time I went to the doctors they yelled at me because I was gaining weight not losing weight. Not long ago I started going to a neurologist and one of the first things he did is ran a test for a metabolic disorder. I was diagnosed as having a low hormone balance of one of my major hormones. It is what affects weight. So all this time the doctors have been yelling at me and lecturing me about something which I do not really have control over. They assumed that all I eat is junk food or I eat a lot and I do not do either. I kept telling me doctor that I was trying to lose weight and could not and he was saying all my health problems are because of my weight. I am in the process of changing doctors because I am taking classes for health care administration and this is a doctor bias. Some doctors think that everything is linked to obesity and it is all that person's fault and sometimes it is just what life or genetics handed them. The doctors with this bias often fail to give obese patients the same quality of treatment as they would thinner patients because society places such an emphasis on weight.

How hard did you try to eat less and exercise? My friend was close to 300lbs. I know it took him almost 2 years to drop the weight. He was doing cardio and weight training. He worked his butt off 5 days every week. He was exercising about 2 1/2 hours a day. Do people honestly think they can drop the weight by trying? It takes more than trying to drop the weight. You can blame your weight on a disorder if it makes you feel better but its not what makes you heavy. Once you get too large it takes a long time to drop the weight. I'm sure this "low hormone balance" existed back in the day. How many people were large back then? Few if any. C'mon. People are big now because we don't eat a proper diet and we don't exercise enough. Some of it is genetics but genetics doesn't make you 100lbs over weight.

I totally agree with you.. I was always 97 lbs when I was younger.. and always thought i could use a few pounds back then. Well, Unfortunately I got my wish..
I have genetics working against me.. my fathers family have all gotten heavier as the years went on.. I was no exception.. But I had a little help and It was not all food- necessarily.
I have asthma and for a while it was out of control which means I was on Prednisone (a corticosteriod) which is well known for helping you put on weight. It took a little while but when I hit 25 years old.. I started putting on a few pounds. at 115 I was already not too happy.. at 125. my mother and aunt started calling my fat.. (lovingly, jokingly but I know they also meant it..) Now at 43 I am up to (almost) 180 (and I am only 5'1") I tend to put on maybe 5 lbs a year whether I want to or not. I don't eat a lot. usually 2 meals a day and maybe a snack. I don't eat much junk food. I am a very picky eater in fact. So it is very easy for me to turn down all the junk food my coworkers eat and offer me.. I don't like A LOT of things.
I can only imagine what I would weigh if I did like all that stuff... LOL.
well a few years ago I also discovered that I have a Hypothyroid condition too.. there is another reason for weight gain.. it seems everything is against me.. I know I could be a bit more active.. And I really need some motivation.
I think I am going to make a new years resolution this year.

Yea. Thankfully I got away from taking that stuff. It has even ruined my bones..and probably the cause of the thyroid condition I now have too.
the only good thing about it.. you can breathe.... Hmmm

I understand the prednisone as I am asthmatic too and it makes you feel like you are starving when you take it. In college, I had to take it for six months because I came down with the supervirus that was killing women in my age group. Fortunately for me, my pulmonologist received an email on the supervirus the same day I was in there so he knew what was wrong but I also gained weight from the prednisone. The only time really that I have ever been thin is when I was in high school but I was not healthy because I skipped meals and chewed diet gum then.

Hi Lindahardin,
While it is true that obesity is a health problem for a lot of people, it is also true that the cause of it is not always overeating. I have always been a very small person and had to work at keeping weight on. Then I got sick and was on these meds that literally packed the pounds on me. I had never dieted to lose weight in my life until then. It's not easy. Anyway there are many other reasons why a person might be overweight other than poor eating habits.

pathetic doctors! though some obese or heavy-weight individuals are truly heavy eaters and undisciplined, they should have known that there could be other reasons like metabolic disorder, etc. or they are not equipped with knowledge? they must be learning more about the trend.
i had gained weight but i am not yet to being obese or overweight but i had noticed the failure of the body to respond to my efforts to limit food intake. i had stopped exercising and i guess that is why i seem to gain weight. metabolism had changed, too.

This was completely unethical for a doctor to yell at you. If he truly believed you were not telling you the truth how on earth did he think yelling at you or any one in this situation would instantly get them to change.
Instead in fact, his continual yelling could scarred you emotionally causing to be depressed and maybe perhaps find comfort in food.
So glad you found a neurologist who can assist you in finding a treatment for the condition. As for this doctor I would probably write him/her a letter explaining how you did not appreciate his unethical behavior and never see this doctor again.
I feel sorry for the other patients not aware that his behavior is not helping instead perhaps not guiding them to see further treatments or specialists.

He also lectured hubby on his weight. My hubby is to a point where he wanted to totally give up on doctors. He battles with depression anyway and a mood disorder and the fact that the doctor brought up our weight every time we went to see him made my hubby mad and upset. We both are going to be going to a different doctor on the 22nd to get established as patients there. I agree that a doctor yelling is wrong. This particular doctor also would not prescribe pain medicine because he says it is too addicting. I am not one who takes pain meds all the time but I need something more than tylenol or motrin when I have a migraine. They simply don't do anything to help. He told me that it is his policy not to give any pain medicine and I would have to go somewhere else for it.

i think the problem doctors face is that most patients lie to them so they probably did not believe you, they should treat everyone as individuals though and i am glad that someone listened to you and you didnt give up. your old doctor should give you an appology as they did not treat you properly medicaly by judging you. i hope you are feeling better soon.

Since I know I have a metabolic disorder now I can set up an appointment with an endocrinologist and they will not how to treat it. I agree that doctors should treat everyone as individuals not the status quo. Thanks for stopping by and happy mylotting.

That is bad way of treating your patients.I would say these people are more money minded than work on trying to work on help people out.You should definitely change doctors and they should be people who can understand your situation and be ready to hear you out rather than scream at you.And all the best on reducing your weight and taking care of your health.

Hi lindaharding627,
I know too well what you are talking about, when you say that the doctor would not listen to you about what you were are were not eating. Their opinions seem to be the only right opinions, which can sometimes cost a person his or her life.
Smart people, like yourself, don't just take every word their doctors tell them as gospel truth; they go for a second, sometimes more, opinion. I am happy you chose that route, and found the true reason for your weigh gain.
It is a shame that your doctor would not listen to you, and become concerned when you told him or her that you were doing all you could to lose the weigh, but instead you continued to gain. For any good doctor, that would have sent up some "red flags" and a 'battery' of tests would have been ordered, thus, finding the problem.
Educating yourself is the wisest thing you can do to help your doctors keep you well. I applaud your tenacity.
Be Well,

I do agree with you on this. Although I never met a doctor yet, but I myself always try to lose weight myself by eating lesser and also doing more exercise. But it seems that it doesn't really work well. Maybe it really doesn't affect much whether I eat much or less or maybe I just don't the right way to burn fats more rather than taking in. Well you might be right on the metabolic disorder test that having imbalance hormones. Maybe it does affects our weight somehow.

I know exactly where you are coming from.
I managed to lose 9 stone which I kept off for years but after I had my gall bladder out my weight shot up and IO had terrible problems keepoing it down despite still eatinmg a healthy diet.
The most annoying thing is that when you go to the doctor over ANYTHING it is ALWAYS put down to your weight!!

I was a chunky teenager so I sort of understand what you're saying. During that time I didn't know what I was doing wrong because it seemed like I wasn't eating more than what my skinny friends were eating until the doctor told me that I was suffering from a hormonal imbalance. It affected my self-esteem a lot because when I was eleven I was asked by a clothing company to model for them and then to suddenly lose control over my weight, it was a heavy blow. Now that I'm older, I think I have better understanding of health and body-typing...so long as you get to do things that you want to do, you eat right and enjoy life, you don't need to be a size six to be able to say that you're healthy. Anyway, have you checked if you have hypothyroidism? Most people with the condition, no matter how active they are or how balanced their diet is, don't lose weight easily.
