Tips for Writing eBook

I was wondering and preparing to get an eBook published. However, could you tell me what I should know before writing an eBook?
A few other question will be:
1. How many pages should it contain?
2. How can i sell it online without needing to pay upfront? I heard some website offering selling service but need cash upfront.
