It happened this weekend in our little city. A 91 year old woman driving her car hit and killed a disabled man on his scooter as he crossed the street in a pedistrian crosswalk. She said she never even saw him. I know the woman personally and she is the nicest, most caring person that I have ever known. I talked to a friend of hers yesterday and she is so torn up about the accident that she won't leave her house. The bad part is that she will be brought up on charges!! She hardly ever drives and gets rides most of the time. Do you think older people should have to pass driving tests? Would you take measures to have your elderly parents car and license taken away if you thought it was necessary?

I don't elderly is prohibited to take a license. It is depend on the government to issue a license to them. Since there is a test for them before issuing a license. The elderly is pass any test and have the right to posses it. Why should not issue a license to that individual.. That is accident and it will happen sometimes. So no to blame even do there is responsibilities in the part of the driver of the car... Yes, I do any measure to see if parents is capable of driving a car or not. Have a great day!

This is so sad. But does she still have a license? Don't they test drivers before they're allowed to drive?

Oh, dear. I hope they get this sorted out and just let the old lady go with a warning. I'm pretty sure this will keep her away from the steering wheel whether they revoke her license or not. My heart breaks for this whole thing. :(

Grandma should of had her licence taken away from her. It is so sad that things like this had to happen, but begs the question, "When are you too old to drive?" I think that this man would have still been alive today if that woman hadn't of been driving. It is clear that something wasn't right with her, and she should have known better than to drive when she was in a condition that wasn't fit for her to drive. I don't think that she should be brought up on charges because she is too old to serve times in prison, but I think that she should have her licence striped from her and sent to a psychiatric hospital to live out the rest of her days. The family of the old man could try and sue the state and the DMV for issuing the licence to woman who was unfit to drive her car, but that won't bring him back.

Hi, jillhill. This is some terrible news to hear about! I am very sure that this older lady is shaken into pieces over what has happened to the disabled man. I am sure that she did not meant for this to happen at all. I don't mean any harm but if she rides most of the time and hardly ever drives herself, then this could be another reason that this accident has occurred. I am sorry that this has happened and I know that she and her friend is too.

Tell me about it. I have went through some strain in my life where I felt this way many of times. I have even said that I wished that I could change what would happen in the present.

this is really terrible incident for the driver and the victim. but reading that she was 91 years old already, she is really in very good health to be able to drive on that old age. i wish i could be that health when i get that old. but still what happened is really sad incident. and i feel bad also for the disabled man who was killed. i think that elderly folks should not allowed to drive at all. they should have their own drivers with them.

Hiya Jill, Sad Story indeed. If she hardly ever drove I don´t think her attention would have been up to par for a start off. But she probably did not realize this. I think in some cases where they have lost a certain amount of ability and reflexes that they should not be given a renewed License. I think that they do need to have a Test for health and vision at least every Year or two Years. I hope by that age we have another kind of transport where we don´t have to drive for ourselves. I feel sorry for the Man that got killed and his Family too my condolences to them too. As for Lady I hope that they are not harsh with her either.

Hiya Jill, Bad deal for everyone Jill it really must be because the Lady never meant to knock him over in the first place I´m sure. All this week I have seen "stupid acts" committed by People who are not 91 years of age all these People were well under 50 years of age. It´s just that my Husband has very good reflexes thank goodness and he was able to avoid them. Twice this week we have had Drivers overtake us on the wrong side of the Road and in especially really tight spots too. Hope it all calms down and things work out for everyone.

I think they should be tested more after a certain age yes but not just take the License away, they need to be tested to make sure that they are still safe to drive The thing is though this could have happened to anyone, ok she said she did not see him but again that could happen to anyone I feel so sorry for her and I really hope that it will not make her sick and I hope that they will not be to hard on her If she had been speeding, drinking and driving then yes she should be punished bad no matter what the age, but this was an unfortunate accident which she has to live with now, which I think is already a severe punishment for her

That is just awful. I think that maybe they should because you never know and situations like this just prove it. I would definitely take measures with my mother when she's older like having her take the test over or driving her wherever she wants. Just so that accidents like this can be prevented, it's better to take precautions.

I agree as well too. Another driving test for elderly citizens would be a must! I would have made sure that my mom got another test done so that she could be safe on the road while driving.

hi jillhill here in the US in Californina older people must not only pass the written and physical drivers tesst they also must pass eye chart tests as well. Yes if I was y oung again and my parents were elderly if they flunked the drivers tests a nd eyesight testsI would indeed stop them ff hi again hillhill yes in California older people must not only have to pass both written and drivers test plus an eyesight test. If th person does not pass the eye exam he or she must go and get fitted with new glasses then try the vision tests and the drivers tests again in order to get a license. If I were in the situation you mentioned I would stop my parents from driving at once. f ]

My 82 year old husband voluntarily gave up his license after he failed the vision test. Now, I have to drive him everywhere he wants to go. My father refused to quit driving until he had a serious accident that put my mother in the hospital. He was younger than my husband is now, but my brothers and I had noticed driving errors he made and tried to get him to quit driving. Yes, I think testing seniors is a good idea, even though I'm probably in the category that would be tested. We age at different rates. I feel so sorry for that woman who killed the man on the scooter.

Here in Australia there is a mandatory medical one has to take at age 70 or so but I am not sure if they have to sit another driving test or not. My father is 77 and still drives although not often. He had to have a medical but has not as yet sat another driving test. It is so sad what happened to the lady in your discussion. Killing someone in a road accident is a pretty tough thing to live with regardless of age. I would imagine her confidence has been shaken quite a bit. It is not for me to say if she should be stopped from driving although 91 is a pretty advance age…

Yes.....we don't know for sure but testing would tell if she needed to give it up or not.

I do think that there should be more regulations on who gets and keeps licenses. I don't think it needs to be specific to the elderly. Maybe we all take the test when we get our license renewed. I would most definitely take measures to make sure my parents were only driving if they were safe. Not only could they harm someone else, but also themselves. I'm sure this woman is nice and I'm sure she didn't mean to hurt anyone, but if she knew that she was more safe getting rides from people, maybe she should have trusted her gut. It is an unfortunate accident, and hopefully she doesn't have to do time.

yes, they should be retested every year courtesy of the government. An old person's ability to dtive safely can change pretty quickly.

I think when a person gets a certain age they should be tested every year because I see a lot of them that are driving hazards. They drive without looking where they are going. If we are not aware of our surroundings we can harm ourselves and others. So yes, tests are necessary!

How tragic! I feel sorry for the 91 year old woman, but this seems to prove to me that pedestrian crossings are not always as safe as they should be! One teaches children to use them and every year drivers kill children using them! My grandfather drove until he was in his 90's, but I still think that they should have driving and eyesight tests for older people!

My grandmother was a wonderful woman. When she realized she was too old to drive anymore, she stopped. That's a good thing to be humble enough to realize your own limitations. It removed tons of stress from the family worrying about what she might do in her car.

I do think there should be testing for elderly people but I am not sure at what age. I am 55 and if I had to take the test again, I am not sure I could pass it. My mother is 85 and sometimes talks about how hard it would be to not be able to drive anymore. Loss of independence and such. I have observed her driving, and for now I think she is still okay. She lives about 20 minutes away from me, and I don't drive too much myself (I am disabled), and my brother is in Florida. I don't know how she will get around when the time comes. Hopfully she will decide when it is time, and I hope it is before anything horrible happens, like the woman you know.

I feel bad for your friend having to deal the guilt. I wonder why she usually wasn't driving though, was it because she felt nervous driving now as the roads would be a lot busier now than when she was young. If she was suffering from Dementia or Alzheimer's then she certainly should not have been driving and shouldn't be charged and I think her family should be held responsible. Especially if they did not ensure her safety and the safety of others. I do think that all seniors over 70 should have to pass a driving test if they have not driven in a long time or have a health condition that they could endanger others, this could be monitored by exams done by their family doctor. However, I believe that some of the responsibility must fall on the shoulders of family members. If you know that a senior in your family is a dangerous driver then you should step forward and try to do something about it. I can't see the courts sentencing a 91 year old woman. It may just be a formality to revoke her license. I do hope everything works out for her.
