Do you still read books? I was brought up in the country without a television so I became a book worm at an early age. Even though I have a television now (and have had for many years), I am still a book worm. Seems like I am crazy about all types of books, from Romance to comedy, detectives, court cases and westerns. I absolutely love books. I was a great English student. I had some problems with spelling but in terms of sentence structures and the basic make up of the language, I never needed to be taught that. I think it always came naturally because I am a book worm. Today it hurts me to see my students missing out on the joy of reading. Don't get me wrong, I love the TV as well as the next man. I love gadgets (I think the fact that I have a degree in Computer Science says it all). If their is a new gadget in the market I become obsessed with it until I master all there is to know and then I try to change it. lol. But books!!! Our children are missing out....

for me, i can say that my children love books. at an early age, even with the tv around, i trained them to love books. they had carried with them this love for books until now that they have grown up. my son though is more of a bookworm than his sister.

Well I am interested to know how that happened. Usually I find as a teacher it is much harder to get a male child to be interested in books than females. Have a blessed day.

I think you should read the 8th response to this discussion then you will understand why reading is so important.

I agree, there are so many these days, especially the young, that doesn't pick up a book because they want it. It's barely so they pick it up even when they have too, heh. I didn't read that many books until just a few years ago (am 20 now, turning 21), but nowdays I try to always have a book in my bag when I go to school or just go anywhere and have to take the train or bus. Reading books are a wonderful entertainment and timekiller, since those 15-20 boring minutes on a bus pass in a flash when I read a book. I really wish and hope people will start reading more books than watching TV or playing games (even though I love to do both myself), but it's an important part of human history to read after all.

I applaud your effort. It is difficult to change habit when you are not accustomed to something. But you are right reading is a great way to pass your time when you have nothing to do but sit and wait or you are traveling. After all this is where you feed your mind.

I am young enough to have always had a T.V. in the house, but I had parents the limited the amount of time we were allowed to use it. They also enforced 30 minutes of reading a day. This was not a hardship for me, because I loved to read and still to this day try to read everyday. I am finding myself doing a lot more of my reading online. My child is less than 2 years old, but loves books. We read at least 5 of her books a day. I try and change them out every week so they do not get too torn up. I do not watch TV around her, and my sitter does not allow the kids more than a half hour in the morning and a half hour in the afternoon.

Great. I like the way you manage your time. I trust that other parents will benefit from your comments here. I know I have, because even when I am reading my TCV is normally on, even though I am not looking at it. I am lucky in that my son when I am not reading to him/engaging him hardly ever looks at it. He is normally busy exploring his environment and discovering new things. I guess that can change though. So i like this.

I am a huge reader and I make sure my kids read too. You are right, kids have far too much tech now that kind of takes the joy and importance out of reading. I love my tech things too, but I always make sure I have time to read and that I have time to read with my daughters too. It is an important skill to keep up. Reading evokes imagination and kids need to have the ability to be creative with their minds.

You are so right. About the imagination I mean. In this I can see writers dying out too because without the joy of reading our children will loose the ability to create/write and inspire through the places their imagination will take them. Our language is also being eroded, and where are the next generation of writers? Writers have to love to read. My two year old is already crazy about books, and I believe it's because he sees me with my books so often. I also buy lovely books for him and read to him as encouragement. I ask you though, where are the lovely books we read as children. Today I find the books for children are not as enjoyable. There is no real interesting content. I have resorted to getting some stories off the internet since I cannot find them in my local book store and the ones that are there are not as fun (I think). Does this mean that my own generation has already lost it's imagination?

Yes, Children are missing out the most wonderful things. I love books too much, I read a lot books in variety subjects. But, my younger brother, he don't like read any kinds of books, I don't know why? May be because people can search and know everything from the Internet, It's one example of why children don't like reading. Thanks for your topic, it is so useful.

I live in a tech world,it's so easy to get in to the gadgets, sucking faster and more information from internet. Most of us have forgot books, let along the children.Reading a book is like going to field and breathing fresh air, when I am along, I prefer to do a book

I certainly do, I love reading books. I haven't gotten into the reading novels online, it just gives me a headache. I enjoy historical fiction, history, mysteries, horror, real life stories, short stories, etc. I have four children and have turned three of them into bookworms like their mom. I am still working on the fourth, he is the stubborn one but he also loves video games and its so hard to compete with that. They all still have their gadgets but my girls at least always return to their books, they never stay away too long. My boy never like reading even when I would read to him when he was small, I would lose his interest no matter what books I tried with him. But I know what you mean I know many children who only read when they have to when its a school assignment, or directions for a new game.
