To homeschool or not to homeschool....that is the question

I am a teacher in a relatively small town. We have had a rash of students not re-enroll in favor of being home schooled lately. For some, it was an option that was not available earlier, and now is. For others, they do not like the curriculum. As a parent, and a teacher, I can see both sides of the issue. If you were able to, would you home school your children? Why or why not?

In my opinion, I think children should go to school better than study at home because when they go to school, they can have more relationship with friends, more social skills, more ability to do things, team works. They can discuss the hard questions with others, if may help them a lot when they go to work in the future.
It is just my personal opinion, many people will think differnetly.

I agree. I think that for a child to really learn all they need to learn, they need to have teachers that have been trained in how to help children. The social aspect is so important. We have just had a student enter school in the fourth grade, after being home schooled. He is ahead of his peers in math, about on par in Math, behind in Science and Social Studies, but way behind on social skills. He has not really learned how to share. There seems to have been very little discipline in his life. What he wanted he got?

There are too many teachers where I live that completely ignore social problems in children and sometimes make them worse. The good (and great!) teachers are hard to find these days, and much sought-after!
What if the parents were trained in socializing children? Do you think other activities with other children can make up for the lack of schoolyard interaction? (I mean like sports or art classes -- those sorts of things.)

Well there are positives and negatives to both sides. I was in Independent Study...okay not exactly home schooled, but kind of close. I enjoyed going at my own pace and was speeding through some classes pretty quickly. On the other hand I missed out on all the social activities. I wish I could have made some friends and done some things. I was allowed to focus on my studies, but some one on one interaction was a little difficult for me, but might be different being home schooled.
