Dirty Surroundings = Dengue

Philippines

It's devastating to hear that in the Philippines there are already 501 children who died of Dengue and still counting... A lot of children are still in the hospital waiting to be cured. I think it's nature's way of telling us to keep our surroundings clean or else we will pay. And who's paying? Our children. It's sad but true. Too many garbage around, too many dumps, too many clogged and unclean canals, people have to do something or else more child's life will be taken. Also, in the news they say that hospitals are running out of nurses due to the number of children confined. No way. There are 150k plus registered nurses without any work who are willing to care for those children even without pay. There could even be 3:1 ratio. 3 nurses to 1 patient. Hospitals should look into this specially now that children need more care.

We've had an epidemic some time back. The dengue mosquitoes breed mainly in stagnant water. While we look at the surroundings we live to make sure that drains are not clogged and that empty cans or bottles do not become breeding places for these mosquitoes we also look into our homes. Flower vases that contain water should be regularly changed. Flower pots that have plates beneath should not hold water for more than a day and stuffs like that. We still keep vigilant at home, in schools and other public areas.

While there were lots of public education in the mass media on educating the public to eradicate these breeding places the onus is on each of us to keep our homes and backyards dengue-free.

Thankfully that isn't something that we've had to deal with here. However, it is really sad to hear that the innocent children are the ones that are the victims of the carelessness of the adults. That said, I think that if there are unemployeed nurses that are willing to volunteer their time to take care of these children, they should be taken up on the offer. There isn't a child alive that doesn't need someone with them all the time and considering that the children are sick they need even more care.

it increases every year, i wish government officials can do something about it. to clean their areas before the reainy season arrives. to save lives. prevention is better than cure. so why wait to cure if we can all do something to prevent it. it should start in our baranggays. if the area is clean then it will be dengue free. specially the people who lives in crowded areas. they need special attentions within cleaning their area. its not yet late, people will surely participate for they can see that this is not a joke.

Have you heard about the news about the antidengue pellet? You just place the pellet on stagnant waters so to avoid mosquito breeding. It isn't that dangerous too when accidentally taken by a child or your pet, the news explained. It is discovered and made by a Filipino. In this way, it is cheap and costs about 30 pesos. haha

Stagnant and polluted water are really the home for mosquitoes. We as an ordinary citizen should clean our surroundings. We should not keep stagnant water. And the reason why many children die is because of the delay treatment. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever is not really that serious if it is diagnosed early. Its treatment is mainly hydration. I've heard from Dr. Tayag (I think), the epidemiologist of DOH, that the real reason why children die from this disease is because of dehydration. And sometimes other parents don't really care if their children has fever. As to your concern of nurses and hospitals, YES! Our hospitals is in need of human resources. But we can't blame them to not get nurses because not all nurses are proficient in delivering care for these patients. If you may know, in a tertiary government hospitals, their usual ratio is 1;40. Mosquitoes are all over Philippines. We should realize that PREVENTION is always better than CURE. Have a good day!

That's one sad story! Yes, if we neglect taking care of the earth, nature will harm us. We are supposed to be the earth's caretakers not its destroyers. We will not get away with it. And as usual the most innocent are the first victims. Mankind, in general, just doesn't care!
