E-books?
I definitely prefer a soft-cover book so that I can carry it around to read on the train or whilst waiting for someone. Generally unless it is some reference book than perhaps a harder cover book is needed.
Although E-book has been touted as the current fad, somehow I still prefer holding a well thumbed book. Call me a traditionalist if you must. So E-books are a no-no for me. Probably I just like to lie on the bed to read or I don't like the backlight of the PC/laptop.
Somehow for new releases of books, hard covers are released first and one has to wait awhile for the soft cover. I am not sure what is the logic here or whether the distributor wants to move the sale of the hard cover first.
Your say please.

hi jinghan, so far you are one of the few who like ebooks. Yup, it has certain benefits such as being able to accommodate more e-books in the electronic device but on the other hand, it uses power too! But to each their own as long as one enjoys the habit of reading ... and which is a good habit.

Soft cover for me...because they are light and my arms don't get tired holding them. Many times, especially on trains on my way to work, I find my arms numb from holding a book in the same position for too long, and that was a soft cover book. I can't imagine what a hard one will do to me :P
Acutally I don't mind e-books as reading on the screen is about the same for me as reading a real book. I spend a lot of time at the computer so I can actually read a lot of books by reading them on the screen.

hi bmp, yup, soft cover for me too. More portable and easier to handle. Normally hard covers are for really thick text books ...

Hi carpdiem17,
I am an avid reader. I sometimes have more than one book that I am reading at one period of time. It really doesn't matter whether the books are soft-cover or hardcover, I just have to read.
I agree, that the soft-covered books are more convenient when you are traveling. You can just toss them in your purse or pocket while on the run. I tend to take better care of my hardcover books because I put them in my library when I am done reading them, unlike the soft-covered which I donated to charity.
E-books and books on tapes are also becoming two of my favorite ways of reading, especially the books-on-tape. I enjoy listening to the books while driving long distance.
No matter what form by books are in, I love reading them.

hi Angelgirl, my same sentiments. I can hang around the bookstore like Borders for a long while enjoying the piped-in music too.
Even when travelling abroad, I try to make it a point to buy a book from the local shops there - a book unique to the culture there as a kinda memento.

You know, it really depends on the book. There are a lot of times where if I am going to just read a book once, then the soft cover version is the best. That way I can read it, then I can throw it in a Garage sale or donate it or whatever, and there will be no fuss. However, if I intend to keep a book in my collection to read again and again, it would have to be a hardback book.
With e-books, I never really liked them for casual reading. However, having e-books for my school textbooks, that is a great thing to say the very least. It is just easy to punch in a search of a term that I need to find and be done, as opposed to thumbing through the hard cover book. Still, there beats nothing like a good book in my hands when I am actually reading, so I go and read actual physical books, hard and soft covered, when I do read.

I prefer soft-cover books, with basically the same reasons. A hard cover book is also too heavy and a waste of paper, unless it's a reference book which will be used frequently.
I don't like e-books. Even with the latest technology my eyes get tired after reading electronic stuff. I sincerely hope that traditional books will not be eliminated in the future!

hi greygoo - a book is like a companion or a good friend that you often bring around or which keeps you company in your moments of quietude. Certainly a well-worn book that you can enjoy and devour over a period of time. Definitely not a ebook which you need to power-up and shut-down and has a cold distant feel to it all.

yeah, that must be it.^_^
but you know what, books make me lonely sometimes. because i remember that time when i was far from my friends and i didn't have anyone to talk to.
i wrote something that day:
in this world of imperceptible motives of want, need, and hypocritical propriety, a book is my one true companion; probably because it has not the liberty to choose.:(

whoa greygoo, that is very nice.
Books are my real companion as they have never deserted me and I find a lot of solace in them. So far they haven't disappointed me yet.

Hi there Carpediem,
Love your name...my daughter has it tattooed on her back! I love reading and I don't much care if it is soft covered or hard covered books...it is the reading material that matters to me. I have never read a book on-line and probably never will. To me that is a separate activity. I'm on-line and not reading. My book and I always have one and carry it everywhere is for killing time while waiting for my daughter to try on a zillion outfits only to buy one or maybe none. Or while waiting at a doctors appointment or sitting on the beach. I read each night while reading dinner and often times before going to bed. I do not read while sitting on the computer. I don't read or listen to books while driving in the car. No one has read me a story since I was a child. My dad's reading inspired me to read on my own. If I ever go blind then I hope that I will at least be able to listen to story telling. Until then..I will never go for those shortcuts to reading. Reading is good for your brain and the more people rely on computers and technology then the more their brains will fade away. Sorry to say but it is true.

hi sid, yup I love the name very much too as it is a constant reminder to "Seize the Day".
Definitely the reading material matters, haha. I have always thought of a good book as a good friend as I will spend quite a long time with it especially if it is rather thick. Should my eyesight fails in time to come, my next best friend will be the radio.
I do agree with you that using too much PC can make one a bit dumb and not knowing how to do things in a more manual way. Continue to enjoy mylotting.

I am not really fond of E-books. I have read some of them but I never get to continue. I really do not mind if I am out of date as to having to carry books. There is something about it. Perhaps maybe because I can easily read it on paper rather than have it on screen. I can easily put it down if I stop and go back to the last page I have read it. With respect to the cover, it really does not matter. For as long as its a book that I can hold and read rather than have it in ebook form.

hi jpso, it is like a book by any other name is still a book. Yup, I agree with you as I am absolutely not keen on e-books although it has been touted as the next big thing.

hi carediem I love to read, and have both hard and soft covers
and paperbacks are great to take with you whem waiting in the
waiting room to see your doctor.Even standing in line waiting in the
bank you can read so easily.I always read in bed before I fall
asleep asits a great soother.so soft covers do help in these
situations for sure.

hi hatley, i find great solace in reading. There was a time when I was so immersed in Susan Howatch's books which are rather interesting. And definitely soft covers coz they are so easy to carry around!!

The problem with e-books is that they're not economically sustainable. First, you'll need to buy a reader like Kindle or maybe an iPad. Then you'll have to buy the electronic version of the book itself. Incidentally, this version of the book is more expensive than the actual paper version.
If you ask me though, I'd rather hold a book in my hands. Needing a machine to read is kinda too weird for me. As for soft cover or hard cover, it depends. I was juggling between buying the hard version of "Mockingjay" or the soft cover. The soft cover is obviously cheaper and I don't have that much cash. However, I ended up buying the hard cover version. Why? To maintain a uniform aesthetic on my shelf.

haha maryjane, I like the reason of your hardcover purchase.
Although the laptop or Kindle application can store a number of e-books, I still prefer reading the trusty physical book.

I don't like e-books either. It's so unnatural to read a book that way, I think. I like holding my book and I like using different bookmarks. LOL! I prefer soft-cover books, though. Aside from the fact that they are cheaper, they are lighter to carry around. They can easily fit in my hand bag when I bring it like to the bank, to the Social Security office, or those places where I need to wait. I also don't know why books are first released in hard-cover. Maybe because they want the first copies to be elegant and looking oh-so-important.

hi jonnifc, oh yes - I like to keep bookmarks in my books too and some of these bookmarks are nice mementos from overseas or gifts from friends. So it gives the whole reading experience a very warm feeling.

if i intedn to keep the book for long time i'd rather have the hard bound but if i'm on a budget i'd go for the soft bound. anyway i'd still keep it protected. :)

hi ergfortes, seems like you certainly know how to preserve your books.
But in recent times, the local library has been doing a pretty good job and there has been a very wide variety of books and novels normally found in bookstores. So I have been a regular visitor at the library too. Definitely minimises my expenditure on books.

i also prefer soft-cover books. You're right that it's much easier to carry around. I also read before i sleep and it's much easier having a soft-cover book in bed than a hard-cover one. I also don't like reading ebooks as this seems to cause more strain to my eyes. But with the kindle and ipad that may change. But for now it's soft-cover books for me.

hi jessdiokno, definitely so coz you can also easily read them in the bathroom whereas for ebooks, you fear water may affect the tool itself.

I prefer hardcovers. They're sturdy, durable, and they last much longer. They don't do that awful front page curl-up thing and their spines don't get all creased up. Plus you can hit stupid people with them! I've always preferred reading a hardcover book over a softcover book. The extra cost and the extra weight does not bother me. If I can afford to get the hardcover (and if the hardcover is available, because not all publishers can afford to print everything in hardcover) then I'll choose the hardcover.
Ultimately though, books are books and I can enjoy them no matter what format they come in. I'm not a fan of e-books though.

Not really, I like both! and I own plenty of both. I am not so into e-books though. Not yet anyway, maybe I will be at some point in the future! I am considering getting a Kindle after all...

hi puccagirl, perhaps Kindle allows you to store your e-books and therefore save on physical space. Enjoy your new toy. For me, it gonna be real physical books.

hi...
if the books are for keepsake, i wanted it on hard-cover so it would look good on the shelf.. if its just a passing one (after u read it, u give it away) the soft cover. i am not a fan of e-books... too much computer for it... but a little of the audio book will do fine with me... specially when i'm traveling... With a book on hand and a bookmark is the best.... ^_^
