My (not online) friends were talking about the Quran burning that was supposed to take place and was cancelled due to the huge public protest. Someone mentioned 9/11 and gave me an interesting take on it. What he said is that the Quran says retaliate against those who threaten your way of life. Is this true? Is it also true that when the US was drilling for oil in the middle east we were also trying build casinos? Did any government request that we leave the middle east or was it just a group of orthodox Muslims? I would like to understand the events that happened prior to 9/11. Also I want to apologize if I have said anything offensive as I am ignorant to the topic and only trying to learn.

Just as you will find offensive verses in the Quaran, you find similar ones in all religious texts. Christians have not always been the friendliest bunch of people, hence the Crusades. It is all in how the words are interpreted, I take retaliate against those who threaten your way of life in a much more abstract way. I am not going out of my way to kill someone who is in my way for a job. Our drilling for oil was not directly overseen by the US government, but rather by the companies drilling. The people they hire are not always the most tactful of people. I am sure that they added to the animosity towards the Western world. Could 9/11 been avoid, possibly, but we will never truly know.

Thanks for your input. Can I ask what your religious background is? I agree I have found many offensive things in the bible but I don't know anything about the Quran. I just wan't some different opinions to mull over and I'm doing my best to figure it out! Thanks for reminding me that its not the government... That was one of those things I forgot!
