Rating Discussions and Responses

I know that some people don't rate discussions or responses at all. I try to do whenever I can think of it or if I have the energy to do it. I usually give positive ratings to people who create interesting discussions that make me think or smile or whatever.
On responses, I usually give positive ratings to people who respond to the discussion and it appeared that they really thought about their response before just typing whatever they want and posting it.
What about you? What makes you give someone a positive rating? What makes you give someone a negative rating?

I usually rate positive the responses that are usefull to the discussion. I mean the meaningfull answers, those that are well documented.
Most of the responses, comments, and discussions remain un-rated, because they are indifferent.
I do use negative rating, especially when I read responses that have nothing to do with the discussion. Or those responses like "yes", or "no", or "me too".

I will admit I have given a person a negative rating as well because their response had nothing to do with the discussion. Before I did it, I looked up their profile just in case they weren't that familiar with English, but this person lived in the U.S. and they were just writing non-sense on several discussions. That just rubbed me the wrong way.

Oh, vhenkins86, I have never thought this way. I'm ashamed of myself. You're so right. I'll be more understanding the next time I see a response that have nothing to do with the discussion.
Yet, even if my English is far from good, if I don't understand the subject, I better stay away from that discussion. I think it will be better for myLot if every myLotter do the same.

sometimes I be afraid of do not understand the question and write non-sense too, so, I read everything careful to be sure I am writing about the discussion, but how my English is not "as good", sometime it could go out something out of contest.

Well yeah I pretty much think the way you think if i like the response discussion, comment then yes I will rate it a [+] but sometimes if i read it and i decrease or dont like what they said or something they said i felt was just uncalled for then i wont rate them at all. So I dont give [-] I just give [+] to people hey what can I say me and you are just nice people haha take care happy mylotting. :)

I with you payout on this one. I do enjoy a great discussion and I will positive as well. I do not rate negative as everyone has a voice in their personal opinions and the way I see it if I do not want a negative comment then perhaps when I post I should consider saying only comment if you agree with me.
So naturally that would not make sense, so I am with you on this.

yeah, i agree with both of you. to me its unfair to give someone a negative rating just because i don't agree with them.

I use to rate all the discussions I respond, and the responses that I thing useful, I don't think it is fair to rate negative just because I don't think the same, it is a discussion, we have to accept all the opinions,if you don't want their opinion, you are on the wrong place.

very good point. all of us are different people with different perspectives and we are bound to disagree about something. you're right it isn't fair to "punish" someone because they have an opinion.
