To return or not to return

I guess many of you out there experienced leaving your things in a restaurant, cab or somewhere simply because you forgot about it. There are also others who are really careless. Usually we pray that, that belonging will be returned to us especially if it's a valuable item. But I want to know if the tables are turned will you also return something that you found? Like for example an IPAD. Personally, I experienced returning a wallet full of money. I found it while walking on the street. The owner must have dropped it. Luckily, he has an ID inside so it's not difficult to contact him. When we met and I returned the wallet he was so happy. He even offered me a few bucks, but I refused. So he asked me if he could buy me a gallon of ice cream instead, but I still refused. I told me a simple thank you is enough as acknowledgement for the deed that I have done. I am also happy that I did that.

I will return 99 % of the situations, because I don't usually forget my things, but it happened a couple of times and I always want them back. If it is something not so important I won't return and will just go home and forget about it. I tend to forget money everywhere and always go back to find it, but not always people return them to you and that is just awful :(

I guess that is human nature. The weakness of others is the temptation to get something that don't even belong to them.

I meant they can't resist the temptation when it comes to money so if they found some they will not return it anymore.

I think that it is very admirable when someone returns an item of lost property! I did this myself once! I found this mobile phone at a public phone box and I went through the contacts list to try and find someone to contact. Anyway, I made contact with some grandmother who told me she would contact her grandson and he eventually met me at the phonebox and I gave the mobile phone back to him. He was pleased! I didn't receive any compensation and I wasn't expecting anything in any case.
I once left my keys at a witherspoon pub and I only realised they had gone once I had returned home and I was facing real problems potentially. I quickly made my way back to the pub and asked them if any keys had been handed in and unfortunately they said no. I had a look around and I couldn't find the keys anywhere. In my view someone took those keys and are probably still in possession of them. Thankfully I got myself out of this mess by calling my landlady who had a spare set and she met me at the flat.
I think it's nice to help people when you can and I'm sure that one day the favour is eventually returned to you and someone will do you a good turn. I like that saying 'what goes around comes around!' So, that's my little story! Andrew

Don't worry Andrew, like you said someday the favor you've done will just be returned. What you did to that person you help will eventually be payed forward to another person.

My brother found a camera that he wants to return but can't figure out how to find the owner. All the instructions on the camera are in German (which he doesn't read), but he managed to get the pictures loaded on his computer to save them. It's someone's trip to America, obviously a vacation. He hopes to post one or two of the pictures on German sites and if someone recognizes the person or people in the photos, they can contact him and identify the rest so he's sure they're the real owners. He figures the camera's too old by now for them to bother with but they surely want their pictures!

As long as there are means that I could return it like for example if that is a cellphone then the owner must dial it and I will answer it for me to return. Actually the small thing that I have return when I found out that my seatmate in classroom left her cellphone and good thing she is also a girl so I followed her at the comfort room and called her name then I told her that she left her cellphone. The simple thank you is also enough for me and I don't want to expect any exchange for it.

You're right! Even the small things or something without value for us, we must also return because we never know if that person needs it too.

Good for you!! Personally i wouldnt refuse the ice cream..
I found a heavy gold chain once. I was attending a religious glass at that time. I returned it to the teacher. What she did with the gold chain was between her and God so it was out of my worries.
BTW I want to share a little knowledge my friend told me once. That if you found a wallet with a lot of money or without a lot of money, it is wiser to remain anonymous. The thing is you do not know how the wallet has gotten where it has. It might have been dropped by a pick pocketer before he/she empties the wallet.
In your case, everything turned out fine but what if the wallet was full and was emptied before you return it, you might be looked upon as the guilty one. You will never know the logic these people has sometimes. Since you are the kind that will return the wallet full of money, it does not hurt to be anonymous.
One way is to get the address and return it through post. Hopefully the postal system where you are is as good as the one here though.

I was so embarrassed to accept the ice cream. :) It's like I just did the right thing without expecting something in return. Good for you also! Oh, really? I guess in the Philippines it never work that way but thanks also for sharing that. About the postal system in the PI, well it's much better to return the wallet personally than via post. Postal system there doesn't work like in your country I guess. Even things mailed cannot be received by their rightful owners especially cards suspected to have money inside. :)

lucky owner for having you around . unfortunately, sometimes, even if one is willing to do what you did simple reasons like time constraints really puts a halt on a good deed manifesting. that's why the owner is so happy not just for your good thoughts but for your efforts of returning the lost item to him.

WOW! That is very noble and kind of you to do that. I salute you for going after the right thing.:)
Awhile ago a cab driver found a bag with canadian dollars and important documents. He returned the money by the help of a radio station. He has kids and being a cab driver means that he belongs to the middle income bracket.
What i am trying to emphasize here is that it is not difficult to be honest. No amount of money can buy our dignity and integrity only if we want to preserve it.
Yes, I will return whatever I will find. Hopefully, there's an ID. You'll never know who owns that money you just found. It could be a father on his way to pay for the surgery of a son or daughter. He could be a foreigner in the your country with no one else to turn and unsafe without his money and documents you just found. There could be a lot of possibilities.
One thing I have learned from my parents was to never desire something that isn't yours.Even if you found it, that thing has still an owner. And, always bear in mind that your action will always make a big difference, negatively or positively. :)

You have done a good jog.
Nowadays, it is very hard to find someone like you.
For me, I shall be very happy to find something valuable.
No matter the found item is valuable or not, I shall return the to the owner only when I can identify him or her.
Certainly I have to do so because he or she might need those money to survive.
Whatever we are doing, our God is watching us.
