Do You Bite Your Nails When Your are Tense or otherwise?

Most of us sometime or the other pick up this bad habit and continue it for sometime. As we grow we realize that it is not only bad for health but also not considered to be a virtue. It reflects many things about our characteristics like we are nervous, we lack confidence and so on. I had given up this habit when I was in class 4. But yesterday, I found that a person aged above 50 still has this habit. I saw this person biting his nails while commuting via a public transport vehicle (known as auto-rickshaw in India). When did you give up this habit or are you still biting your nails hoping that you keep your nails trimmed this way better?

I have never bitten my nails, sweetie. That is a nasty habit and not healthy at all. I wonder if people realize how many germs are under your fingernails. And they bite that? eeeewwww. TATA.

It is great to know that you are one from the lot of exceptions. Lucky, I would say. As for the later part - I think they find feasting on germs more delicious.

Hi dear, I hate doing this. But sometimes tempted to do so. I have a habit of cutting the nails 10-12 days. But certain times, it may not work out. But when I see the excess length than what I like, I fee irritated. Last week itself it happened. I didn’t like the extra length of 2 of my fingers and while walking I started to shape it by just giving a cut on the side of my nail. Slowly I remove it and slightly shaped with my other fingers. All I managed to do well, but I hate to do it. Also, I was very particular that nobody was noticing it what I was doing. Even today also I thought of cutting the nails, as it is excess of normal length. However, it may happens sometime, when we may forget at home to cut it neatly with the nail cutter. Regards, Thank-s

Good that the trimming of the nails just to the edges helps in maintaining the habit of not biting the nails... However even bite the nails even when they are shorter like my brother's kid. He keeps biting them and keeps reducing their size to good lengths. Keeping a nail cutter handy is quite helpful in certain situations. Thanks for your response, Regards, Sids

I dont actually like bite them to chew the down to make them short but when I am nervous I kind of nipple them a little between my teeth. It doesnt damage them but it makes me feel better when I feel out of place and dont know where to put my hands especially when I dont have pockets. My son must have pretty bad nerves hes chewed his nails down on his fingers since he was a little baby. I never have to cut his nails.

OMG, has you kid got rid of this habit or is he still chewing them out? My brother's boy to has the same issue and we are trying to use the medi-plasts(bandages) so that he would not be able to get to the nails for some time and hope that this would help. If you have other ideas, please share. Regards, Sids

You know what thesids, I have always had really lovely nails, the talk of all friends. For nine months now that I have been unemployed, I do not know what is wrong with me. At my age now I am starting to bite my nails. It is really upsetting me as I never did this as a child or teen. Ugh, darn stress. I suppose I could probably buy one of those stress thingys to keep my fingers occupied. As if myLot does not doe that already. HA!

i never had this mannerism or bad habit before though most of my friends do. It's true that it shows lack confidence or nervousness, but sometimes you just don't know you're already doing it, because you're already used to. flipping of hair and touching my nose is my mannerism. even my hair is neatly brushed i keep on flipping it and touching it. Maybe there are just somethings not that easy to remove.

"Mannerism"... Interesting... Hope that would be good enough for another topic and you would not mind me stealing that one from here :)... Kidding. I do that now a days because I am growing my hair and want them to be longer than my wife's. Another one is playing with my pen or anything in my hand while reading or even writing. I don't think these are that bad but do they still reflect our nervousness and lack of confidence? I am not sure.

I do not have this habit, I find that it is not hygienic. I have many friends who bite their nail when they are in a deep thinking. Even now they are still having that habit. Many people are doing it without them realizing it. Actually this is a very bad habit because 1) it is very unhygienic, 2) you will have very bad looking nails. I normally will trim my nail once a week. So I do not have long nail to bite..

Hey Abhi, I have a suggestion for you - Try using the medi-plast (the bandage tape after surgery) on your nails. Try to cover them up. That way you would prevent eating all the deadly virus and germs because you mention there are many things that you start doing when you are tense. Hope that helps keep some germs away from your stomach.

I had this habit when I was in primary school. My neighbor told that put nail polish to nails and I will come out from this habit, you know what it worked. Now, I started to keep my nails long and give shape to it. Also, I started to put nail polish in different style. Obviously, now there is no matter to byte my nails.

When I am in a difficult situation,or stress out I bite my nails. Thanks God I am learning to control myself thinking about all the germs that may have in my hands, so I try not to do it whenever I realize that I am biting my nails.

I used to bite my nails when I was in grade school and I knew I was doing it but, didn't know why. I think is was nervousness. My stepdaughter also did it when she was in grade school. Now when I see people doing it, I think it's nasty but, understand why.

Thank go, i hver had the habit of biting nails, but but my elder sister has the habit and still bits her nails at 36. I find it very silly cos apart from being a bad habit it is also contributes to bad looks of your hands.
