How is our educational system different from yours?
In the Philippines, a child can go to school by the age of :
3-4 - Nursery I and II (optional)
5-6 - Kindergarten I and II
7-12 - Grade 1-6
13-16 - High School Year I-IV
In the 1960's, Kindergarten was an option if you have already reached 7 years old but most schools prefer children to start at kindergarten. (I enrolled for Kindergarten when I was 4 1/2 years old and graduated in high school when I was 14). Then, in the 1980's, a lot of "pre-school" schools opened, and in the 1990's, some private schools would not want to admit children for Kindergarten without having prior nursery classes. Also, Kindergarten had become Kinder I and Kinder II.
The average student will have graduated from a 4 year college course by the age of 20 and a 5 year college course by the age of 21. Now, there is a plan by the Department of Education to extend high school years for another 2 years. In this case, as they said, fresh high school graduates would have been at least 18 years old and may be qualified for employment. I'm not in favor of the extension as it could result to an increase in high school drop outs due to financial burden and the extended 2 years could have already earned him 2 years of college units instead.
