They opened a new trail here in town and my little sister and I decided that we were going to take the kids and walk the trail because both of us are on a mission to lose weight and also because we want to teach the kids good exercise habits while they are young so that they won't have to deal with the obesity that she and I have had to deal with.
So we walked, and walked and walked. We thought that the trail was an 8.5 mile loop track. However, we learned that it is instead a 9 mile trail, one way. When we got to the trail head at the other end we called someone to pick us up.
Do you enjoy walking as a form of exercise? Do you think that walking is very good for you and something that you do on a regular basis? How far is the longest walk that you've taken?

I haven't gone for a walk in awhile, but we usually do enjoy it. The longest walk I know of is 4 miles.. that's one of the trails we have in town, it's 2 miles each way. Normally I stick with 1 or 2 miles so the kids don't get too worn out, and I never want to be too far from the car, or our house, just in case something happens.
Though I'm sure I've probably had days where I've walked a lot further without really knowing. The day we went to the fair we were on our feet for 12 hours straight, and most of that time was spent walking around. I never really sat at all the whole day, and yes my feet were hurting afterwards!

I definitely won't force the kids to walk that far again. I'll let them take their bikes with us the next time. It is a new trail though and we didn't really know anything about it. It is a really nice trail though.

My husband and I love to walk. The longest walk that we took was a trail also and it was 12 miles. We just moved to a new community and one of the best things about it is that we can walk everywhere. I even bought a shopping cart so that we can walk to the market. Try some of the Leslie Sansone walking tapes for w agreat workout. Good luck on your weight loss mission. I'm going to join Weight Watchers today.

I know that I will be able to be successful with my mission. I've been a big girl for almost as long as I can remember and I'm honestly tired of it. I've lost a fair amount of weight in the last year, but I really want to lose more.

I honestly don't know the longest walk I have taken. I do enjoy walking especially with my kids and my dog. I don't go to far from home because I don't want my dog to get sore joints and start limping again. It is a good form of exercise. I just wish I could loose weight as fast as my dog can. Woo, 9 miles one way, I don't know if I could do 9 miles there and back. I have fibromyalgia so walking for long periods triggers pains, plus an atv accident back in '97. I can't stand on my feet for to long before my back starts to hurt. So a quick walk with the dog or I should say a quick drag around the block and that is all I can take. Which we do maybe twice a day depending on the weather. With it being hot lately, it's only been at night. My dog even expects her walks now that if she doesn't get one before bedtime, she has to go for a walk before she will go to sleep. Funny thing, she's a almost 2 yr old Basset Hound, lol.

Well, she's still a puppy in my book. She's a full blooded basset hound that turns 2 the day before Halloween. What gets me is when she wants to go for that last walk. I will be in bed and comfy and she will start her, I want to go out whine. My other two likes walks, except one is to old and the other can't behave herself when she's outside.

May as well be a puppy at that age. We have one that is about two and a half years old and she still acts like a puppy.

That is cute that she has to have her walk before she is able to go to sleep at night. With my dogs, they just seem to sleep all the time anyway.

Where I live, in Calgary, we have walking and bike paths all around the city. I mean that literally, the paths all connect to each other at some point and they travel around the whole city. That is quite an accomplishment as I live in a very large city, in Canadian standards, of just over a million people and it's spread out pretty far.
A lot of Calgarians use these pathways to back and forth to work. It amazes me how many people use them. They had a set up to track the amount of people that walk the path by my house at certain hours of the day, before work hours and after work hours, and they had it on the news how many people used the path on average for the week. The number was amazing to me, it was in the thousands every day. And that's just the path by my house. It was something like 3 thousand people a day on average.
Right now our pathway is closed due to work being done on it. I'm not quite sure what they are doing but there are a bunch of big machinery there and they have been working for the last month. I will be happy when it is done because for the last 3 years, since I have lived here, I have been walking that pathway every day for exercise. I was walking at least two hours a day. I would walk down to the back of the zoo and see the animals or I would walk to the river and sit for awhile.
Since it has been closed I have had to just walk the streets in my area but it's not as pretty or as hilly and I like the hills because I walk for the exercise.
As far as the farthest I have ever walked, I don't know it length but I know in time, my sister came to visit me last summer for 5 weeks and we walked one day for 6 hours straight. I think if I had to say how far we walked I would say we walked at least 40KM, but that's an uneducated guess.
Cheers and have a good day my friend,
Chris

I don't know how long the distance actually was, but I've walked for 2 hours once because I didn't have a ride to get home. I've walked a lot when I was younger but I don't do it at all anymore. I think it is very healthy and as an American, I lack it.

I do think that one of the main problems that Americans face is that they are too sedentary in their day to day life. It is a good idea to get out and move.

I personally believe that walking is the best form of exercise. It benefits the body, the mind and the spirit. I often go for walks and enjoy the healthful benefits from doing it.

The fresh air is another of the great benefits that you are able to get from going out for a walk. I don't particularly like treadmills, but I would like to get one to use during the winter months.

I honestly wouldn't mind to walk outside during the winter. However, I have arthritis in one of my legs due to a break when I was a child and it does make me very uncomfortable.

A treadmill for the winter months is not a bad idea, especially if we have a problem with the cold. But even in winter I like the outdoors. I dress warmly of course. So I'm hoping this winter to enjoy walking in the snow and keep up with my outdoor walking.

Yay for the walk! Sorry it was longer than you anticipated! That's one reason I don't want to go on one of the riding/walking trails here because I know of the few spots it comes out but I have no idea how long each segment actually is and I don't want to go alone (for safety sake).
I bet you were hurting after walking all that way! Have you been back to the trail since?

I've wanted to go back. However, the kids won't have any of that because they are afraid that I will make them walk too far again. Of course, I'm planning on walking about two miles out the next time and then walking back to the car. That would make a 4 mile walk and I really don't think that is too much.

Walking is definitely a good exercise. From time to time, I do walk to exercise. But due to the demands of work, I cannot do it more often. However, when I am free, I usually walk for about an hour coupled with some jogging. I cannot determine the exact distance since I just walk in an area near my place and instead of measuring the distance, I measure the total time of my walk.

Measuring the time works well too. I wouldn't have known the distance that we'd travelled except for the fact that they had mile markers on the path.

I really like that it is free and it is something that we can all do together. I've been a big girl for the majority of my life and I don't want my children to fall into the same trap that I've been cursed to.

Wow! That's a long hike!
Walking is a good form of exercise, and I do enjoy it. I go to school in NYC so I do a lot of walking :P My building is just over a half mile from the gym I use, so on gym days, in addition to the gym workout, I walk just over a mile going to and from the gym. The longest I've walked that I can remember is just over 10 miles in the city- 5 miles updown, then turned around and walked back down a different avenue. I used to go hiking a lot as a kid, but I don't remember how long those trails were.

Hiking trails vary a lot and the benefit from them varies as well because they aren't always on mostly flat terrain. I can definitely see why you walk on a regular basis living where you do.

dear dora,
i havent had a walk for so long i forgot how nice it feels. i remember the longest i have had was about 4 kilometers, but that was years and years ago. i even go out for a bike before.
but things and time management would not permit. the only time available for me would be at night. but it will not be safe to walk at night. am planning to at least have a treadmill at home but still saving.
have a great day.

When walking outside isn't possible for you, I think that a treadmill is a great alternative. However, I don't think that there is anything that will actually beat a nice walk outside.

Yes, I also do enjoy walking as a form of exercise. We do have a trail here near where we live and I like the convenience of it when we feel like getting healthy, and taking a hike.
I think ours is also a one-way trail, but it's only a couple of miles long. But what I like about it is that it's uphill. I could really get winded going uphill, and it is such a relaxing walk going back.

It really is quite a trail. After some research after we'd already done it, it basically runs from the heart of the city that we live in to the Kentucky Horse Park and was designed both for local people to have an outlet for their health and also because Lexington is the host this year to the World Equestrian Games so it is also for visitors as well.

I am daily walking for about 30 to 45 minutes. Nearby i have a park where i used to walk min. 5 rounds. I regularly do walking rather than doing exercises. It makes me body fit and bringing briskness through out the day. I enjoy walking. I have also a plan of taking long walk.

One of the beautiful things here in Lexington is that they are adding more walking trails that are off of the typical streets so it is safer for pedestrians. I plan to visit many of those to find some new favorites.

I love walking, it's a really great workout and I love going for walks by myself with my ipod. It gives me some "me" time and really allows me to think and reflect on things, and have some space from everyday life. And I get in shape while i'm at it!

A nine mile walk with the kids. Either you guys were in decent shape, or the last part of that walk must have been relatively miserable.
I've been on long hikes before and towards the end you are getting tired, feet might start to hurt and you feel like you should have been to the end by now. All you can do is just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Walking is good exercise and I think it is going to be part of my future before long.
By the way, i would have called for a pickup also!
Have a great day.

Yes, I enjoy walking very much. I think that it is one of the finest forms of exercise a person can do, because, unlike running and jogging there is no wear and tear on the leg joints and lower spine, and you can walk quickly or slowly whatever suits your energy levels. _Derek

hi dorannnmwin I used to walk a good hour most days but then I ruptured a tendon in my left foot just from running in place.
The quack doctor I had then said it was just a sprained ankle
and go get back to walking but it was muc h worse., my foot rolled'toi the inside and was mishapen . I could not wear ordinary shoes as my goot turned over on its side. so i finally got my hmo to send me to a foot specialist and found out it was a ruptured tendon and was left go too long and could not be operated on. or so he said I think if I had been thirty instead of sixty at the time I wold have got the necessary surgery but instead I am condemned to wear a brace on orthopedic shoes. the darned things cost one thousand dollars as they are c ustom made, first a cast has to be made of each foot then the shoes are cut and =the heavy brace is attached to the darned left shoe and finally i get the finished shoes and a copay of two hundred or more dollars which i do not have now.I know I am lucky not to have to pay the whole thing but to me now living here in this retirement center that takes all but one hunred t wenty five dollars each month to pay the room rent and board I am not floating in money. I am my lotting just to afford my internet bill so need some more funds from something else. so for now I am sidelined when I really do need to walk and lose weight,.

I don't think that I would be able to handle a doctor messing up like that. And the cost of your custom shoes, someone ought to be shot for charging a person like that.

One of the best ways of doing physical exercise is walking.Any one can walk from youth to old age. Some people go to gym for physical exercise but still it is not suitable to all and for all age groups . But walking is for all.No doubt every one walks and it said a lady who prepares food for 5 people does walk for a kilometer {subject to correction} even though she is not aware of it.Unlike in gym where exercises are mostly meant for developing particular muscle in a particular exercise ..walking is not for developing particular muscles. It is a general exercise keeping every limb trim.Youth can walk long distances but the old are advised not to take very long walks. In fact they cannot.
As for me I do go for regular walks in the mornings for the last so many years. That keeps me trim throughout the day.We don't get tired at work if you go for morning walk. That is my experience. In fact i used to go to a town from my village and the distance was 5 miles each way. After completing the work I used to get back come in the evening besides walking in the town for getting jobs done.Roughly I used to cover distance 13 to 14 miles a day. In short walking is good for all people of all age groups in any place and in any day.

Yes, i love walking. it is one of the best ways to loose weight. as a matter of face research has shown that walking is the most effective way to loose weight when compared to jogging, diet or weight exercise etc. i walk at least 8 miles a day as a regular routine and i always make sure i have company when i walk. that makes it more enjoyable and fun. started walking about a year back and i have lost 52 pounds in the last one year just by walking.

Eight miles on a daily basis would probably be pushing it a bit far for me right now because I have my son with me all the time. However, I think that given enough time we would be able to work our way to that point.
