A Nose Ring, North Carolina and true Freedom of Religion

Have you heard of the North Carolina Teen who is being suspended from school for wearing a nose ring? She is a member of a religion named The Church Of Body Modification and she is exercising her religion by wearing a tiny nose ring. She and her mom have contacted the ACLU and are getting ready for a fight. It was implied in thew article that if she were a Hindu or Muslim there wouldn't be a problem. So Why is it a problem? Is it because her religion is new? Or that others don't believe there is such a religion? It should not matter! We all have freedom of religion. And there are some rituals in All religions that may seem strange to non members. But that does not give us the right to tell Anyone they can't practice their religion. The Only reason a nose ring could get in the way is in gym class if she is playing soccer. And besides from the pictures it is a tiny. ring. I bet many would look at her and think she had a mole! So now because of all this , she is out of class, there will be a lawsuit I bet and she will probably win enough money to pay for her first semester of college. All because of a tiny nose ring? Your thoughts.

Listen the "Church of Body Modification" is a non-theist group, they even say so. They are not a "religion". They are trying to be classed as something they are not. I do not blame the school for not recognising them as such. I think the girl is going to lose if she goes to court and should lose. Let here wear the nose ring after hours if she wants to. This is not a religious thing. If she was Hindu or some other REAL religion I would say she was being discriminated against, but these folks are just going after a tax thing or something.

I hink ther school is the one who loses. It shouldn't matter what other call this group. If they have a way of life and it is spirirtual that's enough. It seems like North Carolina is saying because they don't see this a religion , they will ignore her rights to practice. Sorry. It doesn't work that way.this is why there is a separation of church and state. Let's face it if it were up to States And/ Or Congress Only Christianity , amd Protestant Christianity at that, would be the " True religion. All other would be cults. I like this fight. Sge isn't going to take out her piercings and sge shouldn't have to. and I love tjhis too. North Carolina ios saying if you have you nose pireced Don't come to school. So Any one who doesn't want to go to school can just have their nose pierced and stay home.

All I can say is "Bizarre." It may not have anything to do with religion if the school board has a policy that it violates. it wouldn't matter then at all.. you know like, if they don't allowing smoking on campus it's true for everyone! You can't smoke claiming it is part of your religion and hope to get special rights. However, if it is indeed part of her religion and they allow them in general but are not allowing her to wear her nose ring, then that would be an issue! We probably just don't know all the details!

Well, that makes a little sense. however it is possible that the "religion" was created to get them to allow it... crazier things have happened. It's like in Jamaica people will say they are Rastafarian just so they can smoke pot.... but they have no idea of the religion!

Thanks for sharing with me, now I know! lol! But that is precisely my point, we create things to be part of our "religion" that really aren't.. just so we can do it!

You know what, if she wants to wear a nose ring, then there shouldn't be any problem with it. As long as she isn't breaking any laws, then I don't see the problem. Also, yes, there is freedom of religion in the United States of America, and I think people have forgotten this.

Haven't heard of it till you posted this. I think that is how people treat little cults that have just started. The bigger cults also known as religion will just step on that little critter, you know because it bugs them. That's how I see this.
