What would you tell your kids?

My discussion about my sister's cat dying suddenly yesterday made me think of my kitten dying when I was 8 years old.
When I was in 3rd grade I had a kitten named Mittens, how original. One morning, my sister and I woke up and were looking for Mittens. My parents told us that she got outside and ran away. My sister and I ran to get dressed to go look for her. After some time, I am not sure how long, of walking around the block calling for her and looking in bushes and trees, we went home dejected.
My parents finally admitted that Mittens had died the night before in a freak accident. She ran into the banister when trying to get out of the way when my mom tripped on the stairs. She died almost instantly.
They lied because they didn't want us to have to deal with death. We ended up dealing with it anyway. We buried her under the peach tree in the yard.
Would you have told your kids the truth or made up an elaborate story?

Well, I am one of those crazy folks that believe we should be honest with our kids as it is the basis of trust. I would just tell my kids the truth. It would hurt far worse to find out you'd been lied to later. Plus it makes you wonder what other things you've been lied to about!

I do not think it is a good idea to lie to kids. If there is an issue it is better to just withhold the truth for a while than to make up something that you will have to change later. If someone is caught in a lie even once then there is no more credibility. It is self-defeating and as you suggest, will be caught out in the end.

I would go with the truth. My parents did something similar when I was a teen. Granted my sisters were quite a bit younger but still. I eventually found out the truth. I think it would have been better if they would have at least told me the truth. If they didn't want the younger kids having to deal with it fine. Tell the teen the truth.
