Friends, please avoid using laptop on your bed because placing your computers on soft surfaces like mattress, blankets prevent air circulation from cooling devices on the lower surface of laptop.
I came to learn from a forwarded mail that recently on July 4th a 25 year old man died in a fire at his home. This is what happened. He graduated with MBA from University of Wisconsin-Madison two weeks earlier and came home. Had a lunch with his dad at home and decided to go back to clean up his room at school. His father told him to wait and see his mother before he goes back for a few days.
He decided to take a snooze while waiting for his mom to come home from work. Neighbors called 911 when they saw black smoke coming out of the house. This 25 years young man died in the three year old house.
It took several days of investigation to find out the cause of the fire. It was determined that the fire was caused by lap top in the bed. When the lap top is on the bed cooling fan does not get air to cool the computer and that is what caused the fire. He did not even wake up to get out of the bed he died of carbon monoxide.
Friends most of us use our laptop, note book on bed. The heat can also kill sperm cells if kept on lap. So let us all decide and make it a practice not to do that. Risk is real. Let us make it a rule not to use lap top in bed or put computer on bed with blankets and pillows around. Please also avoid having computers, TVs, mobile phones, in your bedrooms!
If you can't avoid, place them far from the beds.I do use a Toshiba laptop, but I keep it over a portable stand made for it specially, it has small studs, such that when placed there is a half inch gap between them to dissipate the heat.
Do you use laptop, note book at home, or use a desk top? Where do you keep that?
Please comment on this too.

I have heard about this also and I beleive in it. I could feel the heat. Usually the cooling fan is covered when place on soft places like beds and mattresses. I do still use my laptop on the bed but usually I place it not directly on the bed but rather on something hard to support and insure that the ventilation can work properly.

Oh, my god! That's horrible! I swear I will never use my laptop on any soft surface! I have already known that using laptop on bed can damage laptop itself. Today I know that this activity can even cause a fire disaster and kill people...Thank you professor, for your useful information!

I myself have a Dell laptop and I generally use it on my lap. Though I haven't received any mail about it but I was already knowing it. When I place it on my lap I always make sure that the portion for inlet and outlet of air is open and there is a circulation of cool air. I also replaced my old table with a new one as the previous one was blocking air circulation due to a cloth peace on it.
I always make sure that the bottom part of it doesn't get too hot as it can damage internal parts and can even cause fire or spark.
Anyway thanks for the informative discussion!

OH, I WOULD AGREE!! Laptops can be very warm, or hot over time when used continuosly in a day. I use my laptop in a table and even then it gets really hot... i would even have an electric fan directed to it. :D
Thank you for sharing this with the rest of the people here, and for letting us know of the risk. :D

Yes...i did know about it. I use a hard surface like a book or a plank of wood to allow enough circulation of air to cool the machine. But now a after reading this i will take extra precautions.

Wow, that's terrible! Yes, we have to be very careful how we use any electronic equipment, lest something like that happen to us. I am so sorry for what happened to that young man. :(
