Do you do car boot sales / garage sales?

Tomorrow I am going to take a lot of unwanted stuff to sell at a carboot sale, well I hope I will sell it! It seems to me that one mans junk is another persons treasure and there will always be someone who wants to buy that item that you no longer want. What do you do with your unwanted items...do you send them to a charity, sell them on e-bay, do carboot sales or just throw them away?

I never did garage sales, it doesnt seem to be so often used here in the Netherlands and neither in Denmark, there are though places in Denmark that has open every weekend, where you can rent a place and attempt to sell your stuff... I have though been considering to go through my things and see if it maybe would sell, but often I end up with the easy thing and throw it out after I asked my friends if it had any interest.

I could maybe, but it also seems a little wierd in this culture... Often value goes rapid down unless you have something good to sell. Some items also keep value alot better than others... So you would need to have some experience in the field to make the most out of it.

I don't know about garage sales Downwindz, as they seem to take place more in USA, but at carboot sales here in the UK items are never sold for huge amounts of money - people go to them to find a bargain :o)

Hello Downwindz, I wasn't aware that this kind of thing doesn't happen in your part of the world, I suppose the places where you say you can rent and sell your unwanted stuff is much the same though. Maybe you could be the first person to hold a garage sale and start a new trend :o)

I try not to toss stuff in the trash if it's re-useable...

Yes, i think we are all becoming a lot more aware and conscious of the effects we have on the environment by just trashing stuff - which has got to be a good thing

Hi, catalady, When I finally get around to gathering all of my unwanted items, I donate most of them to a charity organization such as Goodwill or the Salvations Army. However, I do save some items to sale at our community's annual gargage sale. Living in a gate community, I am allowed to have a gargage sale on the first weekend in November. These sales usually bring in a nice sum of money, but what I don't sell I donate that to the charities, also.

Hi catalady, you are right, I have all ready started gathering things that I think I no longer want or need. If they don't see at the garage sell, I will donate them. They will not sit another year to collect dust.

Hi Angel, that's good that you have a set date that you are allowed to hold a garage sale, at least you can gather all your stuff together and declutter in advance.

I enjoy going to garage sales. you can find some good bargains and unique treaszures there. i also enjoy having garage sales as well. it is the best way to clear some clutter away. You can also make a few dollars along the way.

I wish, Indonesia has that tradition for any unwanted goods or junks that we have in our house. In my country, boot sales/ garage sales is normally done by a manufacturer or a store for their unsold old products. I either throw the goods away, give them to the needy or sell them for a very cheap price to Pasar Loak (a market specialized in buying junks or unwanted goods).

I just love the philosophy of carboot sales..you sell your unwanted item to someone who does want it...you make money and space and they get an item they want at a good price. It's good that you do have somewhere to sell your unwanted items though jenny

I have never had a car boot sale before but I would just love to because of the experience of doing one and it just seems like a lot of fun. I have had about 2 garage sales and am planning on having another one for I really need the money. I have donated a LOT of stuff to charity. So I am happy about doing that because there really was a lot! Like had to drive to the shop twice cause it all didn't fit in the car haha. That is how much there was. But I never ever throw anything in the bin unless it is well and truly junk. Like unfixable. Otherwise I would fix it myself and either sell it or give it to someone who needs it. I really hate when people throw good stuff away when it could easily be donated. $-MrDollars-$

It all sounds so relaxing and fun. I mean yeah you need to get up and show people things and talk about your merchandise but still sounds pretty peaceful you know. Yes, like here when it is time for bulk collecting, I see really good tables, beds, lounges etc on the front of people's houses which could easily be taken to charity but they are too lazy to do anything about that. When the truck comes to pick it all up, it all gets crushed. So sad. $-MrDollars-$

It is good fun MrDollars..I sat there this morning with the sun shining, mug of coffee in hand, chatting to people and people watching AND making a bit of money ;o) I totally agree with you about what a waste it is when people throw things away needlessly, I always feel that they must have plenty of money and have never had to struggle to buy things otherwise they would be a bit more thoughtful and donate it to charity or sell it.

Wow cher, thats a good amount of money to make. It's a good idea to do it annaully too, it means you are more inclined to have a good clear out if you know it's your annual sale :o)

In the past year I've done three car boots, usually things that are too heavy for eBay or stuff that I want to shift quickly to make space. Things that I know I can get a much better price for online will go on eBay. And things that I don't think are suitable for either go to charity.

Hi jane, yes you seem to do pretty much the same things as I do with your unwanted stuff. Anything I don't sell tomorrow will go to a charity shop as this will be the second time it has been to a car boot sale.

I have been saving all of my baby stuff, until I decide whether or not I will have another one. If i decide not to, I will have a large garage sale to get rid of it. What does not sell will go to the local thrift store. with the downturn in the economoy, I do a lot of my shopping at thrift stores and garage sales. This weekend and next are the two big weekends in my area for garage sales. For larger items, I post on craigslist and list for what i deem a reasonable rate, and always add or best offer to the advert.

I think nowadays, with the economical climate and possibly being more aware of the effect on the environment, people are much more open to buying used things than they were a few years ago.

I have never had a garage sale before but I do go to garage sales occasionally. I do believe that one persons junk is another persons treasure. I usually sell stuff through Craigslist (like stuff still in great condition like cellular phones, computers, bulk clothes I don't wear) and if I can't - I'll end up giving them to charities. Good luck with your carboot sale tomorrow :)

I think any way that we can recycle our unwanted items is good...but even better if you can earn a bit of money from it!
