What type of oil do you use for cooking?

I used to do a lot of cooking and baking. I chose corn oil because of it's high temperature tolerance and then mix it with a bit of butter, but I also use olive oil in special gourmet dishes, as olive oil is so expensive in our country. My sister recommended canola oil, instead of corn oil, and so now, I'm starting on it. What about you?

As durga said here,i use sun flower oil in my daily cooking. as she told , many indians(including me) use sunflower oil. other preferences in india are seseme oil ,groundnut oil, mustard oil, corn oil ,palm oil, coconut oil etc . one or two times i used olive oil. its taste is also good as sunflower oil. i use sunflower oil in daily vegetable curries etc. in chutney recipes i use groundnut oil or seseme oil. i didnt use canola oil upto now,as they are little expense like olive oil,in my country.i will give it(canola oil) a chance to add in my recipes from now. we indians also use ghee(clarified butter) in some indian recipes. in preparing biryani recipes,i use ghee and in daily meals we add ghee when eating any vegetable curry with rice . i use butter in cakes and cookies only.

That's interesting. I also cook curry but haven't tried serving it with ghee because it is usually oily already from the coconut milk, but I think I'll give it a try with ghee. Also, I have only made chutney once, and it was without oil. Maybe I'll try making one with oil; perhaps it would enhance the flavor. Thanks for the input and thanks for sharing.

In India, majority of them use refined sunflower oil, or groundnut oil, or mustard oil , or coconut oil or sesame oil. very few use olive oil for cooking. and more over our recipes tastes best when cooked in native oil. due to health consciousness and marketing strategies olive oil is into the market. I have not tasted food cooked in that, and its very expensive too. Many natives say rice bran oil is the best, haha...... we get palm oil too, it used to be the chosen one, but now people use only refined sunflower oil. what ever the oil, restricted usage is advised.

More kinds of oil! I have not met groundnut and mustard yet, nor rice bran oil. They are interesting. I want to try them some day. I have used sunflower oil once, but I can't remember if it has a distinct taste to add to a recipe. Thanks for responding.

We also use the same kind of oil that you are using. Have not tried canola oil yet. But before, I just use any kind of oil, usually the edible oil. But its not really good for health. Fats in oil can certainly affect our heart. In fact as much as possible, we should fry food less often. But they do taste great, so sometimes I indulge.

Is edible oil a form of a special oil from something? Because most of the oils in cooking are actually edible. I agree though that we should fry food less often. Thanks for sharing and thanks for responding.

It depends what I am cooking and what I am trying to achieve when I am cooking. I would say about 90% of the time I use olive oil when I cook. If I am trying to fry something though I will use regular vegetable oil. I try to keep my cooking very healthy though so olive oil is best. I don't use it to make salad dressings though because it does not taste very good mixed with vinegar, for that I use vegetable oil.

I have never tried vegetable oil for salads so I never knew the difference but I could try it some time. Thanks for the input and thanks for responding.

We have been using canola oil for several years now. They say it's just as good as olive oil but not as expensive. Sometimes I put a little sesame seed oil on my stir-fries and noodles just to add a little flavor. I have yet to use olive oil at home, though. Just like the other responders, olive oil is also expensive in my country. So I hesitate to buy it. But maybe one of these days I will. Cheers!

I'm using canola oil for cooking. Sometimes if needed I use olive oil but for our everyday use it's canola oil. I started using using canola oil 3 years ago.

For special food, I will use olive oil but for a normal cook, I prefer to use corn oil since they said that it's healthier than other kind of oil that I can find in the supermarket here.

I used to think that too (regarding corn oil). Now that there are many types of oil available, I would like to try out the recommended and affordable types. Thanks for responding.

Yes I prefer canola oil for all cooking purposes. But sometimes I can't even afford to buy a bottle....so my only option then is the common vegetable oil which i believe is made of palm . or palm oil. it's cheap, it's okay, it's not as unhealthy as lard, but yeah, i still would want to use canola (which is healthier) as much as possible

Mostly, I use olive oil. In certain recipes I add a little butter. I use vegetable oil in some recipes, especially stir fried rice or vegetables. If I have any other oils in the house, I'd use them either out of need, or if a recipe called specifically for them.

Olive oil. It is simply the best, and probably the healthiest too.

Thank You For Your Inquiry!!! The type of oil we used for cooking in our home is vegetable oil...this is really good oil...also we used the common oil when we have run-out of vegetable oil...so it is different...it depends on the situation...

I use different oils for different dishes. I like using olive oil for italian dishes and salads and breads. I use vegetable oil for soups, vegetables and some local dishes. I've tried canola and corn oil... but I usually use those for deep frying. By the way, my secret to well-cooked eggs is no "oil", just salted butter.

My parents used to use only vegetable oil for all cooking, maybe because it was the only one available during their time. Now, there's lots of different kinds of oil and the cheapest s vegetable oil. I still use it, too, whenever I visit my parents home. They believe that, any oil coming from vegetables/plants are naturally healthy, so it won't really make a big difference. Thanks for responding.

I try to use olive oil since that is the best for you but I will use just about any oil that is available for my general cooking and nutrional neess. I think canola oil is pretty good for you as well.

Yes, most recipes do have plain 'Oil' or 'Cooking Oil' for oil and usually won't make much difference if they specified the oil to use. Thanks for responding.

I use palm oil. It's cheap, easily available and from a report that I watch on TV, it's considered healthy too. If I don't use that, there's coconut oil around here. Olive oil only sell in supermarket and can be pretty expensive, even for a small bottle. The same goes for corn oil.
