Hoarding is a form of OCD. It causes people to hang ounto possesions that are no longer useful and keeps their house cluttered, and unhealthy. I admit to having a minor hoarding issue myself, but I know people who have severe issues with this. Does anyone know anyone like this and were they able to change this behavior?

I have never been like this myself, I am quite the opposite in fact and the older I get, the less attached I get to material things. But I do know someone who is like this. He has tried to change many times, but just could not do it. I feel very bad for him, I think it is a real illness in his case!

They actually recommend confronting the person like holding an intervention. I am the most concerned about my sister who has a problem like this and being as she has two children in the house, really needs to get a grip. I am concerned for her, and for an ex partner as well.

I personally don't know anyone who is a full-blown hoarder, but I know that they have shows on TV who have this issue. If anything, I think that the first step to getting over hoarding would be to admit that you are a hoarder and ask for help. You would also have to let go of the excuses that you use in order to rationalize your actions.

Yes, now that you mention it, I remember seeing those shows too! They were quite interesting as far as I can recall too!

I have a mild hoarding issue, but not
cause of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).
Mostly, my issue with hoarding is more
about being poor and not really wanting
to throw away anything that I will
have to buy again later.
For the most part, I don't have the money
to simply discard clothes that I no longer
need or get rid of extra electronics
cause they are no longer in style.
I try to tuck these items away in a box
up in the closet and hopefully we will find
a way to use them later.
Just recently, I was given a big bunch
of clothes by a friend, most of the stuff
is either too big or too small.
I thought about throwing it away or donating it,
but I might just launder well and sell on Ebay.
That would be a big win for my family
if it sells.
Not a lot of cash, but even twenty bucks
would be really good.

i haven't read anything yet about hoarding associated with OCD, maybe i should read on that in a bit. anyway, i'm like you too. we just don't have the same concept of hoarding here. as for me, i keep stocks of a certain thing i'm buying and i end up not being able to use them either because they've expired or i forgot that i have them already or where i kept them. it's a waste of money so it's not all good, however, in a way it helps to minimize possibility of running out of stocks. just being organized, yeah being OC.
in your case- hanging on to possessions no longer useful and making the house cluttered- it is a different thing. i once saw on tv that people who do this are most likely the types who could not let go of feelings easily. if they loved someone, they can't let go easily even if you see them with another partner already. if they hate someone, they couldn't easily forgive. maybe you just need some quiet assessment of yourself to determine how you can go about it positively and use it to your advantage.

It is a form, but I am talking about severe hoarding, not just having too much stuff around the house that you don't know what to do with.
