Yes. I've dated one of my best friends twice already. The reason why we don't stay together is because we live in different states at the moment, but we still stay close because we were best friends before we ever started dating. A prior friendship with the person helps if you want to stay friends after a break up, but there are other ways.

In an ideal world we should be able to accept an ex lover as a friend, after all you have been friends as well as lovers but in reality this often doesn't happen as the split was acrimonious and and have often fallen out with your lover causing the split. So really it depends just how you split up I think

No. For me, accepting him/her as a friend after that breakup is like making myself believe that everything that happened was just nothing at all. I can't stand smiling back at him/her, calling him/her a friend, pretending that i was not hurt. Because for me, every simple smile could bring all the broken pieces back.

yes, i think that is possible most especially if you parted ways without having real bitterness between the two of you.

Of course I can accept it because we have a different relationship and we can't forget each other just because of a break-up.
