Another soap opera canceled...will any survive?

With the cancelation of another long time soap opera, As the World Turns, I am beginning to wonder if any soaps will be able to survive. I imagine that they are just very expensive to produce and the fact that they just don't have the viewership they used to as many more people work during the day, that the ad revenues can't afford them to stay on the air.
Do you think that the rest of the soaps will fall one by one? Will the cancelation of the few lead to better numbers for the others that might save them? Do you we might see more shorter run soap opera type series(similar to telenovelas that are popular in other countries)?

The canceled soap was on a long time and certainly was costly to produce. The ratings had dropped a lot for As the World Turns and the network really had to make a change. I don't think all the soaps will be leaving anytime soon, as there are still many people watching television in the afternoon.

I hope you are right. It was hard saying good-bye to Guiding Light and World Turns. These were the soaps that I grew up with, the ones that my mom watched and that I got all my friends hooked on in college. Seeing them go, is like losing an old friend.

Hi. ucibear. I am not really sure. I do know that two Soap Operas have been taken off of the air. They are Another World and Santa Barbara. I don't see these soap operas on the air at all anymore. I believe that some more may be taken off. But when this will happen, I am not sure.

Hi Uicbear! It's been a long time.
I watch the soaps on ABC and don't think they are going anywhere soon. However, fans of those recently cancelled shows on other channels probably thought the same thing.
I know a number of people who DVR or tape their soaps. Also, many watch at night on Soapnet.
I have watched a few night-time short run shows with my husband and enjoyed them. I am not sure that that is the way to go for daytime though. That gives people the chance to only watch for 5 or 6 weeks or however long it runs and then not again for 6 months.
I just don't know what the answer is. I guess we will see in the months to come what the big bosses decide to do.

Yea, life got really busy there for a while, but hopefully I'll be able to check in here a little more frequently.
As for my daytime dilemma, I just don't think I can handle any more Judge so and so shows. My soaps are almost like family time. I watch ABC soaps too, but I catch them on soapnet, whereas the CBS shows we catch at work. Now only Young and the restless and Bold and the Beutiful are left on CBS and they just gave the main matriarch on B and B 6-8 months to live. I know it's a soap, but I'm wondering if that's the life expectancy of the show as well.

It certainly isn't looking good but there are still lots of fans out there. After Passions got cancelled I was just waiting to hear that Days was going to follow since NBC in particular seems to be hellbent on getting rid of soaps entirely. It does suck when a soap goes off the air since I've had about four cancelled on me but Passions hurt the most since I watched that from day one.
