What one doctor prescribed for my eye and vision problems: Read the Psalms

You got it! One doctor, supposedly a Christian, prescribed this to me when I went to him with the then-undiagnosed eye-and-vision problems I was having, gave me the "prescription" to read the Psalms. When I then replied that I can't read very well because my eyes start twitching, itching, and burning very badly and I start getting severe headaches if I read for any length of time, he told me to listen to them on tapes. Well, later on it was found that I have Migraine Associated Vertigo (and its visual issues), regular migraine headaches (sometimes with visual and/or auditory auras), and convergence insufficiency, and all of them combined mean that I was later accepted into the Department of Services for the Blind (which later kicked me out for the MAV that was not yet diagnosed at that time) and Hadley School for the Blind (in which I am a Braille student). I love the Bible, but I don't think that reading the Psalms or listening to them on tape ought to have taken the place of getting me the correct medical diagnoses and the help I have needed. There is a time and place when a medical doctor needs to actually do his job, which is to practice medicine. That includes Christian doctors.

Oh I totally agree..These people who rely completely on the bible don't realize that G♥d provided the doctors and they should use both..The only time to reply completely on the Word is if for some reason you are stranded on a deserted island and there are no doctors..

Yes, that is true, but in this case a Christian medical doctor did not do his job of practicine medicine, and instead prescribed the Bible. What do you do when that happens? I wish I could sue him for malpractice for that but there is no way to do that since not enough harm was done.

Maybe not this time, but if it happens again, ask for all your options. A doctor must provide all options when it comes to treatments and if he won't provide it,I'd change doctors. That way it's in your hands on what you want to do.

The only options he gave me at the time were to either read the Psalms or listen to them on tape. I guess that was his Christian way of saying that he didn't really know what was going on. Oh, and I have changed doctors so many times I have lost count. Some of my disabilities took more than 20 years to finally get correctly diagnosed. But, I definitely do plan to return to the same clinic where that doctor gave me the Bible prescription, and try to speak with the manager there about what happened and what diagnoses I eventually got. (Oh, and by the way, that medical clinic is so full of Christians, at least the last time I was there years ago, they had a small lending library of Christian books.) I am not against Christians but I *am* against what that doctor did. And, if this happens again, I will definitely ask for all my options. I guess he ought to have told me to read the Psalms in Braille?
