Is it always a good idea to do it yourself?

Man hitting hand with hammer - Maybe not always a good idea to do it all yourself.

I've heard and scene so many horror story's of people trying to remodel kitchens and bathrooms and it dosent turn out so well. so I was just thinking maybe its not always such a good idea to attempt to do big remodeling jobs yourself. Another reason I asked is because I'm going to be remodeling my bedroom slightly with a few new things some nice new furniture, and deco items but nothing too big, I dont want to risk ruining my bedroom lol. So what are your thoughts on do it yourself remodeling and decorating projects good idea or bad idea?

Are you an experienced hand-man? If yes then that's a good idea. Doing new things in your bedroom according to your concept is better than letting another person to do it. Yet, if you're not a handy man then better leave it to an experience one.

No I'm definitely not experienced with handy work thats why I'm only doing some very light projects its more redecorating and nothing that requires the use of a hammer haha, I'm mainly just examining the positives and negatives of real do it your self work.

I don't think its ALWAYS a goof idea to do it yourself, if you find yourself not suitable for the job or experimenting it you might end up a bigger expense if it turn out to be a disaster. However, in cases that you think you have the ability or enough skill to do so especially in minor things that would be the appropriate time to do it. It is always best to call someone whose expertise is the area in which remodeling should be done, like plumber or electrician or any other.

Very good and appropriate response, I think your right its always good to get some expert advices before tackling a big home project. Thankfully my project is really tiny and wont require the use of big tools. Thanks for stopping in.

Hiya apples, I got a lot of ideas from watching the Spanish Program which is based on the American Program "Total Makeover". I just loved getting ideas from there. Trouble is no one here is willing to help out money wise or doing anything that has "work" to do with it. So for the meantime I will have to think of something else. That does not take my ideas away from me at all. I just keep on finding more great things to be able to plan to do.

If you feel that you are creative, then by all means do it yourself. It's not a bad idea to ask friends or family for ideas or suggestions, either. When it comes to such things as electrical, carpentry, plumbing, etc., then you need to get a licensed contractor. There are building codes that likely need to be followed, and you don't want to have problems down the road. Check with your local municipality to find out what you need to do, too. Otherwise, you could be fined for improper installations. A neighbor of mine did a lot of remodeling, and when they wanted to sell the place, they had an inspector stop in from the municipality. Most everything that they found was out-of-code, and they were ordered to remove everything that was done, and start over with approved contract work. They also received fines for the work they originally did, and it was costly! If all that you are doing is painting, wall-papering, redecorating, etc., then just let your creativity flow--you can do it yourself.

doing things on yourself is not always a good idea since you are going to decorate your bedroom its take alot of power to push things over there and move things here so i suggest you should find someone to help you out after all two heads are better that one :D

i think that you should not do it yourself because in the process you might not even know what your doing and u might get hurt in the process its much better for proffesionals to do it in my opinion

Of course it all depends upon how much experience you have in doing these kinds of things. If you have never done this before one of two things will happen. Your project will be extended until you learn all you need to know before starting or it may be a disaster. All too often people have attempted this only to find after spending a good deal of money that they have to have someone who knows what they are doing come fix it. Of course if you are not in a big hurry to get it done and take it in steps and the project is not too big it is possible to do it yourself and have it work out fine. If so the satisfaction is well worth any minor aggravation you may encounter. And example would be to simply paint a room and perhaps add window dressing. This can be done if you are sure of the colors you want before you buy. If your not sure start with a small can of paint so the expense will be less if you find it isn't right. If your are talking a true remodel then you had better have some idea of what you are doing before you start or you could find it cheaper to hire someone to do it.

I can honestly say that if you are inexperience of doing this stuff ,this is not a job for you to do because it will be more costly to remodel everything and have it repaired again by an expert after you've done a little damage. :) HGowever, if there is someone you can ask to do the carpentry and painting, then, other stuff that needs to be done, I guess you can already do it on your own like rearranging fixtures and furniture. Just be honest in assessing your capabilities and do not hesitate to ask help where you're strength comes short. Goodluck.:)

This all depends on how capable you are of handling the task at hand. Some people are very good at do it yourself projects. they take pride in what they can achieve on their own. yet other people are not handy at all. some people definitely need help in their projects to avoid disaster. If you have a project you are unsure of, it is a wise idea to get some help with it, You will be happier for it in the end.

One of the mottos I go by is if you want it done right, do it yourself. However, when it's something I know I'm not good at or have little or no knowledge of, I know it's best to ask for help. So if it's something that I know I can handle by myself, I do it all myself. If it's something that might end up really wrong if I attempt to do it myself, I ask others instead.

..i think it is not a bad idea remodeling your own house or part of your house base from our sense of style and taste...our house/bedroom/kitchen etc. can also serve as a mirror which will show our personality...but if you think you're not good in remodeling, then i would suggest, leave it to the expert, get an interior designer if you want some help to make your bedroom as pleasant and appealing to you...
