Do you prefer reading a book or e-book?

For me, if i were to read the whole book, i think a book is always better than e-book. However, e-book is more portable and can even be loaded into your mobile phones. I feel reading e-book is straining the eyes however, i do like to use e-book when searching for particular details/keywords in a book. Sometimes, i do not really know whether to read a book or e-book. How do you feel about e-book?

I think it's funny that you say e-books are more portable... because I've always thought regular books were portable. I always take a book with me wherever I go... and I'm not talking skinny books here. I'm talking 700 page hardcover monsters (I LOVE THEM!). I've heard loads of people complain about the extra weight... but it's never bothered me. I prefer carrying a big book over a skinny little paperback. Hardcover books are strong and durable! And you can hit stupid people with them! I don't like e-books at all. I think the very idea is a crime against bookishness. Technology and books shouldn't mix... that's just wrong! I will die the day my books freeze and crash like computers. Plus I think we're entirely too dependent on technology and I don't think trading in cutting down trees for using up valuable non-renewable resources that burn energy is a good deal.

It doesn't really require any strength. At least, I don't think so. I'm pretty darn weak. Big hardcover books like that are usually much lighter than textbooks. Textbooks can be on the heavy side. Like my Art History textbook with its big thick glossy photo-print pages... it weighs eight pounds. That's more than all four hardcover Twilight books put together. Big hardcover books really aren't that heavy. I don't hate the existence of technology or want to go back to an age where we didn't have it. Technology has done us a lot of good. I just don't think we should be so dependent on it and addicted to it. I don't like the idea of a world where nothing is printed and everything is just data on a hard-drive. What happens when those hard drives crash and freeze-up? (It happens a lot.) Where would our books go? It's a scary thought for me.

Haha... although hardcover books are not as heavy as textbooks, i am also lazy to bring it along with me. Maybe it is too thick to fit into my bag. Anyway, i feel bad not reading enough books since i started to work. Wonder when will i be able to treat reading as a habit again :D

Wow... u must be really strong to carry those books with you all the time. As for technology.., i don't think we can make anything to change it or reverse back time before technology has taken place. Therefore you need to live with it though you know it is burning energy... as we are discussing this, we are actually burning energy as well :D Cheers!

I'll take reading a book over an e-book any day. Consider, I can lie far more comfortably in bed and read a book than an e-book. With a book I don't have to worry about the glare and my eyes, and I don't get back pains from sitting too long. I can also read anywhere anytime. Yes you can do this last one with an e-book but you are not likely to take it to the washroom with you, are you? lol

Haha... now with handhelds that is often small and cellphones capable of storing and reading ebooks, it really is possible to bring e-books into your washroom :D

but not nearly as comfortable you know. Books are so flexible and you are free to lie any how and enjoy

for me, an e-book would be better because you can bring it anywhere. It is better to download it on a cellphone so you can read anytime you want.

It is true that e-books are really much convenient if compared to books. However, sometimes i feel that reading e-books are more tiring compared to reading books. Anyway, i do read e-books more often now and seldom touch on books too :p

I absolutely love reading eBooks! I actually use my cell phone as an eBook reader more often than I use it as a communication device. I always have it with me, so I can start reading anywhere I happen to be. I also enjoy audiobooks though, and occasionally following along while listening to an audiobook. Sometimes when a book is really important to me, I will want a physical copy as well, but then for convenience I will also buy the eBook.

e-books are great in terms of portability, however, i still think books cannot be replaced as it is good for the children to start reading with books instead of e-books. With a book, they can touch and feel and that makes learning easier at an early stage.

Book. E-books are handy for a quick read and it's nice you can read them on your phone but nothing really compares to the real thing. I pretty much mix between the two but there is one thing which is very uncommon in the form of pdf's and that's children books and my kids love when I read an actual book to them. Hopefully books will continue to be published for many year to come, with letters, newspapers starting to be effected it would be nice to hold onto this.

I do hope that books will be published for many years to come too. However, for go-green purposes maybe physical books production will be reduced but still books are quite difficult to be replaced. As you say, children do prefer to see those colorful books which they can see and touch. I don't think they will be used to looking at the screen for fairy tales :p. Furthermore, reading in front of a computer will spoil their eyesight easily.

I have the same view as you do. On one hand, ebooks are portable and cheaper. It also saves storage space since you'd have to shelve books whereas ebooks can just be stored in one place. On the other hand, books offer less eye strain. I also think it's better than the electronic ones since they give you rest from the constant exposure you encounter from the UVs and radiation. For me, as I'm working in front of a computer from 8 to 5, I'd rather not choose to expose myself further to the radiation while reading. Sometimes I also find reading books more comfortable since its easier to lie down while reading, as opposed to holding the ebook reader while lying down. :)

I do agree on that:p As i am also working in front of computer from 8 to 6, it really feels better if i were to look at the conventional book for the rest of the hours.... As i am typing, my eyes are already sore now :p.

I do think that e-books are a great idea but I prefer an old fashioned book! I like the feel of the book in my hand as I’m reading it, I love putting my favourite bookmark in it and I love carrying it around in fact I love bookshops and even the smell of brand new books!

i just finished reading The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown using an e-book. For me nothing beats the paperback since feeling it under your fingertips, flipping pages and the sound of the paper is really good. i think your right about the strain the computer is giving our eyes. although its very easy for me to read using e-book and I could even read it even when I'm at work on a break without other people even knowing I'm doing it. but if you can buy a book, pocketbook its better.

i would still prefer the traditional paper-made books than e-books.first because of my eyes.like you said e-book will only make me see the screen in longer hour.yes, true we can read it even through the small gadget like mobile phones.this will also irritates me.i hate it when i imagined myself reading the whole book through mobile phone.thank god there is an ipad or ebook reader for those who love to read ebook.but i really love to smell the paper book and the feeling is different when we read paper book compared to ebook.i do admit that i have downloaded several ebooks but sadly i never finished read them because i need to open my laptop everytime i want to read it.compared to paper book,i can finished read them in one or two days.anyway i am very sure that both should be balance and i can imagined if someday we will only have ebooks to read~scary~

I love reading e-books too. Though I know there is a greater strain on the eyes, I like its portability and how easy it is to download and delete one. You might bring a paperback during one of your travels and later regret bringing it because you didn't open a single page the entire time, but with e-books, you can bring several and not feel guilty if you had so much activities and didn't get to read them. I also like how I can read the e-book on my Ipod Touch at night without opening a single light, and hence not disturbing my wife who's sleeping soundly beside me. :p

I'm an oldschool all the way, I rather write letters or notes than emails and of course read a whole book than go to ebook, which strain my eyes more than any book and lastly because if I use a computer or mobile phone to read an e-book, I get distracted and won't be able to finish it at all.

Wow. Seldom see people that still writes letters. Are you using express mail to send your letter or still using the snail mail? Anyway, something physical is always better. For example receiving a greeting card is always more meaningful than receiving an e-greeting. However, sad to say i stopped writing letters to my friends when all of them started using email... How i miss some of the joy of writing letters :D

There is really some difference that I can say about reading with an actual book that you can touch when you flip the pages and with an e-book that you have to read through a screen display. An advantage that I would admit with printed material would be they don't need batteries when you want to read them. The fonts are dependent on how they are printed but, the pages wouldn't really make your eyes dry when you compare that to the monitor of your computer. With e-books, as you have mentioned, is portability and you can easily share it with others. Not as heavy compared to their printed versions and you can easily search for words if ever your looking for some particulars. Never the less, I am okay with reading either the printed book or the e-book. I guess with e-books, I just have to get a bigger screen (^_^")

I definitely prefer the good old fashioned paper back. I spend way too much of my time behind a computer to do that when I want to relax or plan to fall asleep. I also find that a lot of reading on a electronic screen tires your eyes. I don't even want to try to read a book on my phone! That small screen and continuous scroling down will drive me crazy.

I agree with you that reading a book in a phone is not fun at all. The only benefit would be you can easily carry it along when you are travelling and maybe you can load in some comics into the phone instead of e-books with lots of text in it.

in really i dont really like e-book because e-book must use some connection to read something ,yeah it is really practice but i prefer a book than e-book because when we read e-book its has a radiation and if i read a book the radiation that show not really high, this only my opinion

Great post. I love the idea of the e-book because it is cool, green and state of the art. I do however love the feel of a hardcover book and the substance of it. I think the e-books are cool how you can bookmark stuff but there is just something cool about reading a hardcover and putting on a bookshelf. Pretty soon kids aren't going to know what it was like to have to go to a store a get a paperback book when it is released.
