I have heard that diet coke is bad for you because of a chemical sweetener called aspartame; is this true?
At the moment I am trying to lose a few pounds so am drinking diet coke but I am a little worried that I could be harming my body. I know that if I drink regular coke I will gain weight so I'm stuck :-(
Obviously the best answer would be to stop drinking any soda but I really look forward to it. I have read conflicting opinions and scientific data on the internet so I just wondered what everybody here thought.
All opinions welcome!

I did a research in college before about aspartame. you're right, it is an artificial sweetener present in diet cola, powdered juice drink, some bottled tea drinks and other "diet", "sugar-free" products. There were some researches that show the ill-effects of continued consumption of this chemical. It's attributed to memory loss, early onset of Alzheimer's and other congenital effects to babies when taken by pregnant women.
You were right that the studies about this chemical are conflicting. But, I believe, since this is "artificial", it really does have some bad effects. Some people say it's better to drink regular coke than the sugar-free one. But, if you really want to lose wait, opt for the healthier options like fresh fruit juices. :)

Yea I'm of the same opinion, got to question why I look forward to it so much really, it can't be healthy and cutting it out all together would be best. I am quite good at quitting things so I think that that's the answer.
Thanks for the quick response!

Aspartame is not good for you but it isn't only diet coke that is manufactured with aspartame. Virtually all diet sodas are made with either saccharin or aspartame. Interestingly, the Shasta brand is made with splenda and there is also a variety of Diet Coke that is make with splenda as well. I recently heard about a cola that is made with stevia which is a natural sweetener but I haven't found out the brand name yet. We switched to Truvia from splenda recently since it is natural and everyone in our family likes it.

Hi bison...sorry but aspartame is bad news. As the previous poster replied it has all sorts of health indications and there is also some discussions as to whether it is actually addictive or not. The best thing for you would be to drink water if you want to lose weight :o)
