Does anybody really believe the world will end/change in 2012?

I here allot of talk of 2012 being a Mayan prophecy and being in line with the time wave zero theory of novelty shifts. I also here about potential solar flairs and alien invasions at the 2012 Olympic games.
Whenever I try to look into this seriously all I find is a load of pseudo science and speculation. Does anybody have any real evidence?
If nothing happens many people will sure look a little silly for putting so much energy into the subject and even going so far as building shelters and stockpiling food! Of course if something does happen then everybody else will look silly.
I am concerned that with all the speculation and almost a mainstream acceptance (the motion picture 2012) that we might cause something to happen when it needn't. Or that certain faction will take advantage of the public's anticipation of something happening and use this to stage an event that benefits them (war possibly?)
Don't you think it is irresponsible for people to keep pushing this date and theory based on little hard evidence but loads of speculation while cherry picking evidence that supports the prophecy and ignoring everything else.
In my local town we even had a 2012 shop open! That's how seriously some people take this, surely it's time to face facts?
Look forward to your responses and any real evidence would be more than welcome as I am open to changing my mind.
Cheers!
