Hey Friends, Most of us here are probably new and amateur photography hobbyists, I have a simple question for you all. How does it feel when you are on "STREETS" photographing with a DSLR camera + Telephoto lens hanging around your neck and people give you odd looks :P ? Does it feel disturbing ? or you don't care ? Doesn't it feel weird that all eyes are looking at you ? This view would differ from country to country, Still I am sure it would make a great discussion topic :), hope to get some honest views and some might find this helpful as well.

Early stage on this hobby, i really feel shy everytime i walk alone on the streets with my dslr especially having telephoto lens on my dslr body. But, when i am with a group of photographers for a photowalk, i no longer feel shy. It boost my confidence in taking photographs on the streets. Now, as i get used to street photography, being in a city phrone to robbery, the shy feeling i felt before, turned into fear. We might have to consider our location for this matter. Our gears are bit expensive, and this might attract robbers. So know the place first, or better yet, dont show off your gadget when walking alone.

hello Bev-arch :) I completely agree with you that it feels better to go in groups, and joining groups surely helps us to overcome the shyness. I am from india and people here are not used to watching a person with expensive DSLR's and look awkwardly at you, some thrash you assuming that you are taking their videos or pictures hidingly :D. So that makes it more difficult :) heheheh Robbers ! good lord :| take care then :)

I do that all the time so I think I'm getting quite good at not being noticed. But I don't take a lot of pictures of people. I've been trying to use my normal lens more because with the telephoto lens I usually get pictures of birds or small details on houses, not a lot of pictures of the whole cityscape. I think that the tricks for taking good pictures with a tele lens is to "hide" so that people don't notice you. At least if you are out to take pictures of people. If they notice they either turn around ( I do so myself) or put on a fake, weird smile.

Hello Torunn :) Its nice that you are able to do street photography without being noticed :), here in india usually people are not used to see a person with DSLR's and will keep staring and you with awkward looks, Also some keep staring thinking whoaaa what a camera :D! so many times it makes difficult to take quality street photos. have a great time mylotting :)
