I worked with Koreans for more than two years, and I've come to appreciate their unique culture. I studied their language on my own and now I can read and write Korean but I can't understand it as much (not yet). But, I really want to be fluent in this language in the future. How about you? Are you interested to learn Hangeul?

I know how to read their consonants and most of their vowels. Their compound vowels are a bit confusing at times. I can slowly read but, I need to improve more on vocabulary as I only know quite a few of them. Grammar too needs to improve if ever I really want to learn the language. Before, I came across a site wherein it had some lessons on how to read Korean characters as well as how to compose some sentences. There are lots of that in the net so, self learning is quite possible. It would be better though if we can really apply that as often as we can so, we get to retain and practice what we learned.

Yes, learning sites are helpful.. But, I think it's better to have real and natural interaction with native speakers. Sentences learned through books sometimes sound strange when spoken.. hehehe

nicajoice, you learned to read and write before you learnt to speak the language? That is surprising. Well, that is possible for a language like Tamil with with very less number opf phonemes. Is not Korean a Chnese family language that has a pictorial kind of Script? Or is the Script closer to some other family group. Like for instance people learning Japanese start to learn the language as speech rather than in writing.

I love their music groups and variety shows especially, Did some self study like you as well, Its really fun to realize that Korean is somewhat actually like English. Its really frustrating to not understand some of the words sometimes. hmm i think we would be more efficient in learning this language if we took some lesson rather than self learning.
