If you found a wallet full of money, would you hand it in?

September 21, 2010 3:47am CST
So, would you hand the wallet in? My husband lost his wallet, it fell out of his pocket when he was cycling. That evening we had a telephone call, from our local post office saying it had been handed in. There was only about £30 in it, but it's all the other bits and bobs, like credit cards etc that are the pain to lose. A lady had found it in the street near the post office. My husband was so chuffed, he bought flowers for the post mistress and the lady.

yeah it would be a good world. if everyone would live by treat those how you would want to be treated and respected. dont judge others for being different. but sadly there is so much hate in this world. people hating each other for being different and having different bleife. just think if everyone would stop that there would be no more wars.. but hopfull thinking lol

Here here, treat others as you wish to be treated. Imagine if everyone stood by that motto.

Man, that's a heavy subject, because I don't even know if hate is what causes wars. More like greed or desire or superiority or something. I think hate stems FROM wars, but it's not the cause. For example, the US didn't really HATE Afghanistan until the Twin Towers (so sad) and then from there it's like all this hate just radiated to that country. I think if we could eliminate all bad desires this world would be a great one. BUT that's just why we have to fight the good fight and be as good as people as we can!

it was good to know that you got it back but i guess it was thrown away near the post office by the first person who had found it, the one who took the valuable cards...

Hi, that's the thing, nothing was taken out, it was complete. We were so grateful

I would never keep someone else's money or wallet if I had found it. Personally I would like to think someone would do the same if they had found mine, to many people tend to keep things which aren't there's and the more people do in effort in returning things that aren't there's the better. I'm always happy to see decent honest people returning things, it's somewhat rare where I live and when you see it's nice.

I have lost my wallet, actually had it stolen off my shoulder, cut off, at the Calgary Stampede. I got my wallet back with everything in it except my money. My purse was found in a washroom and some one handed it in to security and they phoned me and I picked it up the next day. I have found a wallet a couple times, once with $10 and once with $20. Both times I found them in a shopping mall and handed them in to security. I left the money in them both times but who knows if the money was still in them when they got them back. They also had ID in them so I felt secure in handing them in. But once I found a wallet with $10 in it and no ID at all so that time I did keep it because the person who lost it would probably never get it back since there was no ID. I hope that wasn't bad of me!! Cheers my friend, Chris

Heya! I would also return the wallet. I just have that sense of ownership over my things and so I respect that sense for other people's things as well. If the wallet had no identification card or anything that could help me to trace the owner of the wallet then I guess Ill just keep it. If it had cash I would either give it to the church, donate it to an organization, or when I dont have any money for myself at that time Id probably think God has answered my prayers. However, if there was an address, contact number, or anything that would give me clues as to who the owner is, I just might go on an adventure and look for the owner myself.

If I found a wallet full of money. I will find who is owner and handed to it. But if I can't find who own it I will go to the police or any TV station or a radio station call on who is the real owner of the said stuff... I don't want to posses any stuff that is not belong to me. Because I believe it's not good to aim with other belonging which is not to me... Have a great day!

That is just so nice. To think there are still a lot of honest and nice people around to trust with. I like how your husband said thank you to the post mistress and the lady who found it, flowers are really nice. Of course, if I'm in the position of the lady who found the wallet, may it have lots of money or not, I would give and find the owner. I am a victim of the "lost wallet" scenario and sadly, my wallet never came back..

Yes, I would turn in a wallet that I found. I've turned in just loose money that I found in a mall, and, it wasn't easy. The security guards didn't even want to take it. It was a foreign currency. Nonetheless, I'm very happy for your husband that an honest woman found and turned in his wallet.

My personal rule has always been that if I find a wallet and it has ID in it so I can tell who it belongs to, I'll definitely turn it in or return it directly to the owner. I lost my wallet once and an honest person found it and I got it back with all of the money and other contents. I really appreciated that and have never forgotten it and would definitely pay it forward if I had the chance. If, on the other hand, I find money in a wallet or otherwise with no ID and no way to identify the owner, I'll probably keep it, unless there are some other extenuating circumstances.

I'd return it. Maybe the person needs the money badly. What if the person who owns it just borrowed the money from someone because he needs it right at that moment to bring someone to the hospital, pay the children's tuition fee for school, pay all the bills due on that date, etc. We are all just living in almost the same situation. That's the reason even if I need the money badly I'll return it to the owner. It would be different though if the owner is a millionaire. I'd definitely keep it. The owner won't need it. He/ she probably have more than what's inside the wallet in his/ her bank accounts. lolz.

I believe the money, which is not hard earned by you should never be taken. I would certainly return the wallet to the person whosoever it belongs to, but what if it has no name or address on it. I did come across wads of notes once lying on the road. I gave it to the first beggar I came across, only after making doubly sure that she deserved it. Help those who need your help the most and not those who are able to help themselves. I wonder if God does the same or is he helping those who are able to help themselves.

He was really lucky! Most people would not do that. I did find a wallet one time. I took the wallet to the address on the drivers license, I asked for the name on the license, when I showed up, without asking if they lost a wallet. It happened to be the guy that lost it at the door. He was so glad to get it back. He tried to give me the money that was in it, but I would not take it. I would want someone to return mine if I lost it.

this happened to me not to long ago. I was walking to the train station on my way to work and a found a wallet sitting on the side walk. i looked in it to found out any information i could so i could return it. there was no wallet in there, but it was her bank card with her bank id and pin number in there.. and a bank statement saying she just put over $4,000 in the bank. i could have went right to the bank and taking money out. But in stead i put the wallet in my bag and took it with me to work. when i got to work i put her name in facebook and found her. i right away sent her a message telling her i have her wallet with my number. she called me right away in tears with joy!!! i met her later after work and give her back her wallet. she tried to give me some money but i said thank you but you keep it.

Hi emma, That is an easy question for me to answer. If I lost my wallet I would want the person who found it to hand it in, so of course I would do the same. I also feel that a lot of people would be surprised at the number of people who would do exactly the same thing. Blessings.

Yes. Karma will always catch up to you. I notice that if I choose not to be virtuous in a specific situation, it comes back to haunt me 10-fold. I will never make that mistake again.

I would..times are hard and if I lost my purse or wallet-I'd be done for. I'd want the same respect given to me. What a great person to be honest and hand it in!

I think I would turn it in. At least I like to think I would. It would be a temptation if there were a lot of money in it. I wouldn't find the cards the least bit tempting. If it were mine, I would like someone to turn it in. There are a lot of dishonest people out there though so probably not. It was lucky the person that found your husbands wallet was honest enough to turn it in. It was also nice of your husband to show appreciation of their honesty by buying them flowers.
