Would you date or go far with a guy like this?

I have this guy friend who is really quiet and has no confidence with himself. And the thing is, he is head over heels in love with me (he told me this personally). I am confused with his personality because he lacks self belief, trust and confidence in himself. I really like him but this whole attitude of his makes it confusing for me to decide if I should take a chance with him or not. Help me guys!

I once had a long term relationship with a guy like this. He was good looking and financially successful but for some reason he was terrible socially. His self esteem was quite low and this quickly made him very jealous towards me, even though I am average looking and don't make much money. But I was more comfortable socially and this made him literally crazy. He misunderstood my friendly behavior as potential cheating and we started regularly fighting about trivial issues. If he is the shy but innocent type, I'd say go for it. But if he is the "I don't talk to anybody and I'm a possessive kinda guy" then maybe it won't be such a good idea.
