Ok - this is serious.
I have this system, which is nearly 7 years old. It does catch cough and cold at times, but otherwise, it works perfectly fine.
I bought it for 40000+ in those days, with licensed Windows OS.
Now, my problem is the monitor. It is working perfectly - it is CRT, and I am habituated to it. But my father is keen to replace it with LCD. I am inclined to use things till they can be used no more. When I dont feel the need to change it, why should I?
It makes more sense to wait for some more time till the system gives way. Then, I could opt for a laptop instead, with latest technology.
What is your opinion? Am I right, or is my father right? :)

Things are meant to use, use the best things when you can afford it, there is nothing wrong in using things, it is better than using humans.

Your father just give you an option and I think Its better option you wont regret. LCD is really better than CRT. But, in your case you don't want it. Beside if your going to use LCD you have to check, look, search, or find first which is compatible or right for you 7 year old PC. And of course you are right instead of just have an LCD why not have a new computer like a laptop or a desktop with LCD.

vandy my son bought my LCD monitor five years ago and its just
so great, never any problem and it can be picked up and moved'
with one hand. It has a nice really big screen and well I
just love it compare to it Crt is big and clunky and the
screens are tiny and things run off the edge. do let your
dad replace it and you will really love it, I guarantee it. And plus
I think your dad would get a kick out of giving it to you.
Humor hime okay?as for laptops they have to be repaired
a lot more than a good desk top computer. lol

Hatley my dear, I worked on LCD monitors - so I do know the difference. I think in a couple of years my system would give way. Since I am the only one who uses it, and I dont have any problems with it as of now, I felt may be we should wait till that time. That way, we would be buying the entire set, with latest technology. Alternately, we could consider exchanging the entire system now for a laptop. Laptop also has an LCD monitor. :) Dad already has a laptop. :) Both of us stay in the same house. And he is not giving me the monitor! He is making me spend for it! :) And my system has a 17 inches monitor as of now! :)

They could get an awesome computer, that would beat out the power of the computer they're talking about by a multiplyer of 256... 256 times more powerful, for about 1/20th the cost. I can't even believe they still have that computer around...

Hi krupesh, that would be wasting it! :)
@Christoph - well yes, but if I waited till my old system gave way, I could get may 25000 times faster unit. :) That is what I was thinking actually. :)

I would stand by your dad's side --- for how long you would be dominating him lol
Its enough now --- hop onto LCD

Me - dominating? Ha ha. :)
You should talk to my maid. :)
Anyway - dad has a laptop so he is not affected by this unit. Its only my desktop that we are talking about. Sunny it is in good condition. It looks good enough for another four years or so. I feel we can discard it at that point of time, and pick a new laptop with latest software and hardware, instead of going in for an LCD monitor for this old system. By doing this, I would practically be accepting that I will not have a laptop of my own for a real long time. :( Hope you understood the problem more clearly now. :)

I suggest you switch to an LCD since it has low power consumption than a CRT. You computer is only 7 years old but mine is older and it still works well since I only use it to surf the Internet. If you are into gaming or you want a good multimedia computer buy and new unit.

Actally this power advantage would not be there in my case because my desktop is in my master bedroom. This room can get really hot even when it is not summer. I am forced to use AC in almost all seasons. :( But my living room is quite cool. And my father anyway sits there most of the time, so he uses AC anyway. If I had a laptop, I could move there. That way, I could save on utility bills. :)

I think you are right. Why go out and spend money on something when you still have something that works perfectly. I am the same way. I used my first computer until the monitor started smoking, and then later with a new one when it finally went out. I got a new desktop, I used it, til I found a laptop at a cheap price plus no sales tax. Now my kids use it for school.
Only good thing about a LCD is that the monitor is lighter than the CRT's.

Its so heartening to note that many people are like me. :)
Yeah, I could wait for the entire system to die out, and then I could buy a latest laptop. By then technology would change, and I could get something that would last me for my entire lifetime. :) If I buy now, there would always be a risk of some new things coming up in next decade, which would mean even after spending some good amount of money, I would be still left behind in the race. :)

Whoa, are you serious?
I felt in a similar way to you back maybe 8 years ago, in a time of switching around computers for me, when my last one was dying out, and I made the switch from CRT to LCD. I kept my CRT monitor off to the side, out of the way, just in case my LCD monitor would kick out or have some sort of problems. At one point, years later, I had 2 computers, which were both hooked up to that LCD monitor, but I wanted to seperate them into different tooms, so I pulled out the CRT monitor and hooked it up...
And I couldn't stand it... it's incredible how much better LCD monitors look, from the resolution to brightness to colors and contrast, and it's great how they take up so much less space on your desk. They outshine those old monitors by an incredible amount. I went out and bought a new LCD monitor, and I was able to get a good one for about $150. Not expensive at all, and absolutely worth it.
Now, when it comes down to getting your next computer, I don't recomend the direction that you're looking in, either. You're used to a desktop, and you already know that desktop computers can last for quite a while, in where laptops don't last as long, they die easier, can get more problems with overheating, and when you buy them, the desktops are going to have around 5-10 times the power as the laptop. I got my last desktop back about 5 years ago, and paid a bit of a heafty price for the nearly newest parts, for extra power... I just got a new laptop at the beginning of this year, which cost about 1600, and it has the same power (actually, slightly less power) then that computer I got 5 years ago. I do love being able to use, and take the laptop anywhere, but it just doesn't have the functionality as the desktop...
Of course, from the sounds of your computer, I would guess you wouldn't know much about the kind of power that comes with computers, nowadays. Could you tell me, at least, what version of Windows you had with it? I'm quite interested in knowing how long you went with this computer... lemme tell you this, if you're getting a laptop, and you're planning on using it regularly, then don't expect it to be lasting you much longer then about 5 years... just keep that in mind...

There are at least two myLotters who are recommending desktop. And I am now having second thoughts about that laptop. :) My father already has one, and he reallyyyyyyyyyy uses it a lot. :) It is about three years old. So it might last another two or so. :) My system looks good for another five or six years! That is the reason I am not ok with changing any of the original parts. :( It does make sense to hang on with long lasting stuff. Especially since I've got habituated to it. There is only one hitch. This one is located in my bedroom. It can get really hot in summers. I have to keep the AC on constantly even in other seasons because we live in the topmost florr of our apartment. I thought of laptop only because I could move it in afternoons. Now that you tell me...thanks for explaining with all reasons. :)

Not bad if you kept those old things. But you need to remember about flexibility, reliability, workability and performance...
Computer systems today are most reliable and have good performance in terms of speed and capable of doing more things without any interruption...
I think your father, is right even you have point for preserving something. But if you like me that wanted to make more money online. I need a good computer with high performance of speed.
But if your not like me. Maybe you right...why you should buy anything that is not important, right?
Have a great day!

I do need good speed. And I am able to make monies with a good system. But speed is not the criteria here. I am limited by my own speed. Even if the system were very fast, I would still earn about the same. :) Thanks for stopping by. :) Have a great day ahead. :)

I agree with you. Yea wait for the system to end it's life and replace it with a laptop with better technologies. Furthermore it's portable, why not?

If your system is seven year old; it is not giving you a trouble free performance; and its configuration is right for the kind of work your doing, then there is no reason why you must change it. Concerning changing the monitor I would say, CRTs are bad for the eyes, it draws more power, the radiation it emits is harmful for your health. Once it conks off perhaps you would get nothing for it. If you buy a new LCD in exchange, then you might get something at least. It has already lived its useful life. It has already paid for itself by giving you the service. I think you must change it. Laptops are good only if you are traveling extensively but if you are working only at home, then desktops are better options.

I would say LCD will be a better option than CRT. If you work on PC for long hours. Then I suggest you to try to go for LCD.
I would like to mention some Cons associated with it
Cons :-
CRT consumes more electricity (As i see you are eco-friendly)
CRT Generate more heat than LCD's
CRT are heavy(80% lighter) and large (covers more space)
Most important thing:- LCD causes less eye Fatigue compare to CRT's

Kiddo that is so kind of you to state - here is my take
a. CRT is something I already own, so I dont have to buy it, no investment involved as of now.
b. CRT's electricity issue - my bedroom is in south west corner of my flat, we are on topmost floor, and there is no other obstruction between the Sung god and my bedroom walls. I must be half cooked inside with my sweat. :) I have no choice but to use AC even in the month of September. :) But if I opt for a laptop, I can take it to my drawing room, which is in North East of my home, I use AC only in March, April, May, and June in that room. I guess, if I could switch off AC in my bedroom during the daytime, that would be considerably more eco friendly. :)
c. Unfortunately, I have to agree with that heat bit. :(
d. And the weight bit
e. I am never tired when I am talking to my friends. :)

You will definitely see a difference in performance and the lcd might be a bit easier on the eyes. I know I could never go back to crt I used to get headaches from looking at them. Much better with LCD. A laptop is great if you want to be able to take it with you if you are going out to stay with family or anything if you need to be connected for work or for friends etc. I have both and I like them for different reasons.. I like my tower because it holds more has more processing power and I play games and do my photo editing on it. Though I enjoy taking my laptop when going to my inlaws so I can still get my email and stuff and not have to use their system.

Hi mrsmakawak, I have this system, which is a desktop. This one is old. My father has a laptop. Both of us stay in the same house. :) I dont normally have to move out. I mean, we watch television in the living room, and the only place we can keep the desktop is in the bedroom. So I feel it would be nice if I could also get a laptop. That way, I would be able to relocate to living room whenever my favorite television shows are on. :)

beh surely this upload of your monitor should be ok even for a consuming point of view!!the crt monnitor will consume much more energy than lcd one..so i think you can upgrade it!!surely i know whata re talking about because at home i have me too a crt monitor that works but surely after time it is absolete and i thinka lso for your eyes lcd should eb better than crt ones!!

Hi tonyllenium, while I agree that it is going to be obsolete, and it may consume more power, I do not see much point in wasting a thing that functions. As I see, I could use this one till it no longer works for another 5 to 10 years time may be? Then, I will buy a new monitor at that point of time with latest technology that is available at that point of time. That should suffice for lifetime I suppose. I mean even if it becomes obsolete, it wouldnt matter much. But if I change right now, I might end up with a system that I want to get rid of in another 5 years or so. Same situation. :) In any event, I do see merits in your point of view as well. :) Have a nice day.

I have had both a desktop and a laptop. My preference is the desktop. My laptop tore up within two years as my desktops last years longer. And although I do upgrade every couple of years, I still have the older systems. Any monitor that is not a lcd though I have thrown away as it takes up to much space.
My daughter has a netbook, but still comes to use my desktop. My son is a big time gamer on consoles and the computer and always chooses a desktop as it holds more items and allows him to do so much more than just games.
I have seen laptops go for $600 but the desktops you can get for those prices are even better when it comes to memory.
But one thing I don't like about the desktop is I can't take my work with me every where I go. I am stuck to one place and end up rearranging my room often.
If you choose a laptop, make sure to get a good cooling fan as they tend to over heat.

That is an interesting take on this. I was only looking at it from one angle. My father bought laptop about two years ago, and we use it a lot. It is in a good condition. He leaves it on all the time! :( My desktop is located in my bedroom which is the south west corner of our flat. It can get so hot in this room most of the time. Even AC doesnt make me feel any better. So every summer, I work only for two hours! I hate being anywhere near my system then. Because of this, I was considering a laptop which I could take to the drawing room, watch television while working and be more comfortable, you know. But now that you tell me the risks with laptop, I do have to rethink a bit. Thanks a lot for this information. :) Have a nice day. :)

I am like you i like to get good use out of all the things that i buy,i hate to think of throwing things away unless they are broken totally.I find that there are alot of people out there that have to get the latest pc,year after year.To me i would wait and then when the pc breaks then relace it.
