So I recently got into this show called True Blood. I love it! But i cant help but notice that a lot of the main ideas and themes on the show are very similar to those in the Twilight Saga. For example, mind readers, shape shifters, werewolves, forbidden romance, etc. So i decided to do some research. I found that the books that the series True Blood is based on were released way before Twilight book series, so I wonder, did Stephenie Meyer borrow some of her ideas from this series and go on to write a very succesful book series or are the similarities between the two pure coincidence? Im a really big fan of twilight. I really do love the books and movies. But i also love True Blood. So what do you guys think?

Although I love the Vampire Mystery Series (now on HBO as Trueblood) FAR more than I ever even remotely liked Twilight, I sincerely don't think she ripped Charlaine Harris off. Shape shifters and vampires and werewolves and all those things are so common in supernatural books, especially vampire novels. If you're going to have a vampire novel, you've gotta put in the werewolves. It's law ;) (although there are some good ones with out our furry friends).
However, Sookie is part faerie and in the books there are great mentions of faeries and the shape shifting is completely different. Not to mention there are the followers of Dionysis (spelling here?) and so on. Harris went purely mythological while Meyers went Young Adult. She didn't rip off anything.

Now that you mention it, youre right! there are a lot of supernatural books that include all these "beings."

if you read alot of vampire books they all share these same main themes from kelly armstong, laurell k hamilton, Carrie vaughn, LA Banks, Anne Rice, Harris and Mayer each author has changed the themes to suit there series and there ideas a fair bit but they all in general follow the same themes and ideas. Also VERY FEW vampire books do not mention or have main characters who are werewolves or mind readers i think its just par for the coarse
