I saw a lot of baby ducks this year, especially mallards and hybrids. I also saw a lot of baby coots. Very cute! How about you? Did you see any ducklings this year?

We've been to CA twice this year and KS, now we're in Hawaii. We've seen lots of ducks and all different kinds. I don't know the breeds as well as you do but I've seen more adult ducks than baby ones.

I mostly saw mallard ducklings, but I think I might have seen a gadwall duckling or two. The wood ducks don't seem to breed here. We had dozens upon dozens of them all around.

@ gitfiddleplayer--you did not call me or pm me when in Kansas Maybe next time. One of my hobbies is meeting Mylotters.

I saw some last year, and this year too :-)
I've seen a few eiderduck chicks, mallard chicks and of course gull chicks. I also saw an oystercatcher with chick.
I didn't see any of the really small, cute fluffy ducks this year though, in the wrong country at the wrong time.

There seemed to be a lot of baby ducks when we visited the Minnesota Zoo in May. After that I was on the road a lot, doing Census and other things. I did think of you when I saw Killdeer at a home I visited in Western Kansas. They were taking dustg baths at a gully at the side of the road. I have not made the effort to get to the parks and lakes here to look at the wildlife. I have one I see from the road, but the ducks do not like that lake as well as the other one.

Sometimes ducks don't like certain lakes because of predators or overuse by people and their pets. We had a bunch of ducklings at the San Diego Zoo, too. Someone posted a video of them on Youtube. Adorable. It's too bad they have to grow up, but they have to or predators will get them as they're so vulnerable.
Killdeer like to take dust baths, it helps them with mites and helps them blend in better with their environment by matching the color of the dirt/sand around them.
