Opera is more stable. one of the reasons is a better memory management script. A user can have more than 50 open tabs without experiencing a crash. In this respect Opera is the leader, until another browser beats it.
The only real downside to Opera is that sites which are optimised for Opera will not work properly. I have not tested the situation with the latest versions, 10.62 stable and 10.70 beta, so I am unable to say whether there is any improvement or not. Almost all of the sites that I regularly visit do not have this issue.
My opinion is based on personal experience with Opera from version 5, Firefox from version 1, Chrome, Safari, and more than 5 other browsers.

I've been using FireFox for the past 3 years, and I've only noticed it crash a few times (which was probably due to me having too many tabs open or something). Perhaps your computer is infected, or there may be an add-on on Firefox that's somehow causing problems.
If you can't get FireFox to work /at all/, though, I'd recommend using Safari. It's fast, reliable, and operates a lot like FireFox. The only problem is that certain scripts (like the ones used by PollDaddy) don't seem to load particularly well on Safari.
