I use Malwarebytes and have for years. You can use it alongside another anti-virus program if you wish, without slowing down your computer at all. It can work together without any problems.
They have a free version which you can download, or you can pay for it. The free download you will have to scan your computer manually. With the one you purchase it will do it for you automatically. I use the free version as I'm out of work.
I have used this along with Norton Internet Security, and the Malwarebytes found a Trojan in my registry which Norton did not find. I trust Malwarebytes and would never change.
You can check this out for yourself here and this is NOT A REFERRAL LINK...www.malwarebytes.com
Good Luck to you!

Well the best free anti virus program for almost any operating system would have to be avg. This program gives you free spyware and virus protection and it is really easy to use.It have updates almost eveyday in order to keep up with new viruses and it can scan your whole system or just a certain file or area you want it to.It has a virus vault feature where it locks infected files safely away and you can delete them if you need to.

The best anti-virus that worked for me was Kaspersky but it isn't free so I only use it I got infected by a virus then wait until the trial version of it expires. Then I started using AVG which has a free version for personal and non-commercial use. But there were some viruses that it cannot detect. I usually store viruses to test these anti-virus if they can detect it. Its not harmful to my computer since I don't execute them anyway, I only store them.
Now, I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials. It's the most simple and light anti-virus software that I have ever used. This software is free and you just need your XP to be a Genuine copy. Its so easy to use and doesn't have complicated menus that basic users wouldn't normally understand. You should try this one and scan your computer. I might detect the left overs of your virus if you really still have them. -)

Are you sure it's a Trojan, most of the time the Trojan is different with any other virus,I suggest you find some special antivirus software that focus on Trojan,in my computer I have two kinds of antivius software that focus on common virus and Trojan.

Been using eset nod32 for a while now. I can say that it is one of the best antivirus. Just make sure that your virus signature database is up to date. I think that is the basic principle on antivirus softwares. the more updated your data base is the more safer you unit is against viruses.

Hello Darkmoon. I always used Avast as an anti virus and Superantispyware plus Malwarebytes, all free. I now use Linux as my OS because it's a free alternative to Windows and I find it to be much faster. Best of all it's virus proof because it doesn't recognise viruses

The best one I know is Kaspersky, is one of the best antivirus around these days.
The problem is that it's not so "light weight" as you want. It eats up some resources, and on older machines it may be to slow.
I tried AVG in the past. It's good, but it don't detect many viruses, and has significant more problems now that some years ago.
By the way, which computer do you have? So we can find the right program for your current hardware.

The best would be avast or the nod 32 antivirus 4 or it's counter part eset smart security 4.

I think you have a speed internet connection. So i suggest norton anti virus for your computer. If the connection is slow then avg anti virus will be the apt one for your computer. The most relevant thing is to switch on anti virus when you are accessing in ternet.

Go to CNET downloads and look in the Security section. There's a really good range of free internet saftey, antivirus, anti-spyware etc tools you can get.

Here is the complete solution:
Right now virus do not infect Linux.
So, download and install the latest Linux Mint or any other Operating system, which are as easy to use as XP.
They can perform almost all tasks which XP can and in a better way.
They are free.
For the unavailable features, you can use XP.
hopefully most of us can really do away with XP.
For security:
Anti viruses can be installed in Linux to keep the XP and related files clean, without reducing the system's performance.
This way use of XP will be minimized and so will be the malware threat.
While using XP there will still be need of a firewall and anti virus.
1)Zonealarm as a firewall and antivirus is good.
the antivirus of Zonealarm use the same engine as that of Kaspersky.
2)Kaspersky itself is good.
3)Avast, bitdefender, Avira and comodo are the other choices available.
4) Gdata is combination of Avast and bitdefender
Do not use these:
1 eset: because its detection rate is low.
2 AVG: false positives are high
3 norton and McAfee: technicians found virus in systems already installed with these.

If your computer is a slow one i recommend 'avira'. It is good and free. It also will not slow down your system. Kaspersky is also good, but it will male your system little slow. Also you need key or buy an original version.Nod 32 will not slow down your system, but not free.
I recommend you to use anyone of this according to your system. The important thing is you have to update it atleast once a week if you are using internet regularly
