I am considering buying someone one of these prepaid cell phones for a gift for emergency use. Did anyone ever use these? Did you like them?

Very good advice. You want those minutes in emergency. It is exactly the reason for getting a prepaid plan like this.

yes prepaid cell phones are very convinient. and u can spend within ur limits on phone bills. if it is post paid we mostly tend to go overboard and land up paying huge bills every month

My husband and I have T Mobile prepaids and they are alright. They get the job done. We only wanted phones for emergency use so these work great for us, I definately wouldn't use them for everyday use because they can be costly, 30 minutes for ten bucks.

I agree. I think they are awesonme for emergency use, but if you need one all the time then it is better to go with a plan. I am leaning toward tracfone as they have a plan that is about $7 a month.

I'm signed up with Boost Mobile. I thought they were alright until I had a little incident with them. At the moment, I'm not recommending them, but if things are resolved soon, I may stick with them. If not, I'm switching to someone else. --- --- --- "I certainly think Britney Spears is the devil. The way she projects herself and the fact that she is so obviously vacuous. Care to share the incident? I looked at Boost Mobile, but have been looking more into the Tracfone.

Well, I tried to get it set up so that I could buy more minutes online and they ended up taking the money, but they never gave me my minutes. I'm currently working on settling this issue, but if things don't work out, I'm switching to someone else. Probably TracFone.

Yes, I used tracfone the last time I visited the U.S. It worked out great for me because I only needed it for a few weeks. I had no problem with it at all and it sure was convenient for my family and friends to be able to contact me and get together. Next time I go to the U.S. I plan to take my tracfone and just buy a new card.

That is good to hear. Tracfone is one of the ones I am seriously considering. I am glad to hear that the service worked great.

i am having a prepaid card on my cell phone. Just perfect. This is a very popular concept in india.

It's not that popular in the US. More people get into the long term contracts. Prepaids over here seem more popular for children, teens, or the elderly.

I would go pre paid, I'm stuck in a contract with my carrier and it really sucks.

I know those contracts are usually 2 years long. That is quite a long time if you find something better or just want to make a change.

Yes I had one but the service stinked and at the end of the month if you did not use your minutes they stole your money and I just turned the thing off I don't need to pay cingular to steal from me!

Yes, I do not like the contracts in which if you don't use your minutes you lose them. I don't think that is very ethical.

yah, i use one because i dont really have that many people to call...if i need to contact anyone, i use SMS. it's not bad for someone who doesn't use up that many minutes. you can buy them like 20 or 30 euros worth and that should last them quite a while if it's only for emergency use.

See that is what I am thinking. It will be a good gift to give someone to use in case of emergency.

Hi, this is the third time I am trying to answer your question, lets hope it gets through this time. I bought a phone for emergencies only, but got hooked on it, they are addictive. But the beauty of a prepaid is that you have good control over how much you spend.

I appreciate you trying to answer my question 3 times. Thanks for your persistance. I can see how they can be addictive. I think the person I am thinking about buying this for will only be using it for emergencies. I don't think they will use it enough to become addicted to it. But I could be wrong.

It might be smart if you don't want to stuck with contract. I used prepaid for a while it because I wasn't really sure what phone service would be the best for me and there was a couple services that I was interested in then there's so many cell phone services where you need to sign up for over a year contract and I wasn't sure anyway :) I think prepaid is very nice if you aren't sure about using cell phone and also want to save some money :)

Ruby, that is great that you used a prepaid cell phone while you were checking out other cellphone providers. Very smart! Prepaid cell phones definately have their advantages.

I got one for my 15 year old last year for Christmas. It was only $25 at Family Dollar Store and I think you get 20 free minutes with it. The minutes are very expensive. Of course he only uses it for emergencies and at times when he needs me to come pick him up from a football game or other activity.

Yes, I had to get a tracfone not too long ago when my cell phone was stolen. The time is so expensive to buy and you'd be suprised at how fast the minutes get used, even if you are just using it for emergencies, like I did. I would consider buying them plenty of time to start off as well. I would not recommend tracfone for teens though.

My mobile phone is prepaid. I don't have any problems with it. It is ok to use prepaid phone especially if don't use your phone often. It will save you a lot.

I have a pre-paid cell phone currently. I have a virgin mobile one. And when you buy the phone they include a $10.00 pre-paid minute card for you to use to start you off. I personally really like that I don't have a contract with a cell phone company. I like that I can buy my minutes whenever I want. It's convenient for me since I don't use it on a regular basis. When I worked at my previous job it came in handy when I wanted to talk to my other half on my breaks at work. As well in-case there was an emergency it was nice to have on me just in-case something ended up happening. It's been a good deal for me quite honestly. As I don't use the phone a lot, but I find it's a cost effective way to use if you don't need it all the time. As the minutes do go rather fast if your a big talker. But pretty much you pay for what you get! And there are no connection fee's. I hope this has helped. You may want to try it out to see whether you like it or not. And if it's a gift & the person only uses the phone for emergencies or not all the time.. And isn't a big talker then it would be perfect for them.. Like I had stated above I prefer pre-paid cards over having to sign a contract.. After witnessing to many people having problems with cell phone companies that make you sign a contract.. I'd much rather prefer this way of doing things when it comes to cell phones.
