Do You Prefer Getting Paid Weekly Or Monthly?

This question applies to the outside world i.e. not homeworking.
Many moons ago I got paid weekly. This tends to happen in the private sector. Now, once I started working in the public sector I always got paid monthly.
Which do I prefer?
I would say "weekly" wins..just. For the simple reason that if I got skint I knew I would be paid again the following week. When I was paid monthly it just wasn't the same.
Someone I worked with though had a solution because he hated getting paid monthly so chose to do something about it. He set up a seperate account so that - say, £70 would be transferred on a weekly basis and he would live off that each week as opposed to delving into his monthly account. Clever eh?
Is it more convenient for you getting paid monthly or would you like to be paid weekly..or are you paid weekly and prefer it to getting paid monthly lol.

The first job that I had when I got out of college paid once a month and I hated it. I went on to companies where I got paid every two weeks or twice a month. I'm retired now and all of our money comes in on the 1st of the month. I accrue half of it and "pay" myself twice a month on the 1st and on the 15th like I am used to but it does take a lot of discipline.

Does that work like two standing orders or direct debits? It does take a lot of discipline, you're right!

It's actually in my checking account and included in my balance but I keep a spreadsheet of my checking and for lack of a better explanation, I do not include it in my spreadsheet balance until the 15th. On the 15th, I add the second half of the income that I received on the 15th of the month into my balance on the spreadsheet.

Correction to that last sentence it should read ...the second half of the income that I received on the 1st of the month...

i would prefer to get paid monthly as i can plan for the monthly budget earlier.i can manage my money better while if i got paid weekly it will difficult to start a new budget in a short time everytime we meets the end of the week.for people who do not do any budget or find difficult to save money or like to spend money, getting paid weekly is their choice but i would say it is good to get paid monthly than weekly.

I guess you become more disciplined with a monthly budget? I know I used to whereas I'd become a bit frustrated when I got paid weekly..as it never seemed to be enough!

I get paid every two weeks, and it usually works out pretty well. However, I have worked jobs where I got paid every week, and I have to say that I would rather get paid weekly...

Does it work out the same if you get paid fortnightly? You know, if you split it down the middle would it amount to the same if you were paid weekly?
Hope that makes sense.

Basically yeah. The amount I am paid every two weeks is just a total of the amount I earn in that two-week period, so they would just have to divide it in half to pay me every week...

I've never been paid monthly, and I haven't been paid weekly in a long time. I've mostly been paid every other week, though my last company did change it to twice a month. I'm fine with every other week...

This seems to be a popular way of payment (fortnightly) and I didn't even realise people were even paid that way. I don't think it happens here in the UK..it's either weekly or monthly or every 4 weeks without fail.
Mind you, I don't have to worry about any of that in my predicament.

When I worked a job, I preferred to get paid weekly. Mainly because this was the only way that I ever got paid!
Apart from my small stint working in a ski resort in the USA when I was paid fortnightly, getting paid weekly is the main way that I have been paid and I think I prefer it that way so that you can budget easier. If you get a lump sum every month, then you have to be good at budgeting in order not to spend it all at once.

I didn't know that it was so popular in the USA either. It is not really done here that I know of and I did not really think anything of it when I was there. The whole system was a bit of a novelty for me at the time. We got a pay cheque (or check as they call it over there) every two weeks on pay day from our supervisors. We would all be there lined up like sheep in the cold trying to get into their office to get it.
We then had the choice of putting it into our bank account which most of us Aussies had set up, or we could cash it at the casino. We chose to cash ours at the casino every time as then we got two free drink vouchers with each cheque and we could spin the pay check wheel for the chance to win other goodies. You always won something.
Most of the time, you would win drink vouchers, but I won a couple of free meals, a mug and what we Aussies call a bum bag, but the Americans call a fanny pack. Both of these I still have as they were touristy ones so they are a sort of memento of my trip as well as practical.

Is there a reason why fortnightly pay is so popular in the US? I didn't realise this until I started this discussion. Yet again, I have learned something new on this wonderful site that is MyLot!
Yes, I agree with you. Budgeting does become more of an issue when paid monthly. Having said all that, John has always been paid weekly but finds that his bills still come out at the same time and he doesn't always have enough per week to cover the bills, if you see what I mean. At least, if he was paid monthly, the bills would come out a couple of days later, then he could concentrate on budgeting for the rest of the month.
It's very hard to do whichever way one gets paid as bills are sky high now.

I also work with the public sector and paid monthly. I hate it, you tend to borrow a lot before the end of the month, then when you get paid you have to be paying out al your money. I mean some bills just will not wait until the end of the month so you borrow weekly to pay them. Then at the end of the month you have to pay it back. I t like waiting in vain for your pay. I really hate it, I would love to be paid weekly.

I'm sorry that monthly pay doesn't really work for you. Could your bank not split it up into 4 weekly parts for you or wouldn't that work either?
Bills are a menace..they seem to be going up whereas wages seem to be stagnating for people, unfortunately.

weekly.if an emergency comes up you need the money in days for, you're screwed
if you don't have it in the bank.

Well, that's true enough. Whilst I was at Mum's last week hubby had to get someone round to fix the washer/dryer. I dearly would love a new, more energy efficient model but it's been fixed so I can't..although John can't afford a new one anyway, even though it was on offer at Comet!
I guess he can save up for a new HDTV instead. He gets paid weekly by the way.

I think it depends on different habits. Such as here we get used to receive salary monthly. Therefore I prefer to it because the amount will be large than getting it weekly. If we get the weekly salary, probably we will spend the money faster and we hardly have something left. When we get salary every month, then we can save some as the deposit and we won't spend all of it. At least we will have some saving and this is important.
I love China

Yes, I know what you mean about savings. I could save much better when I got paid monthly because I had a seperate account for that and it just got transferred automatically whenever I got paid. When I got paid weekly I didn't really have enough money to save religiously every week..but I did pay for a couple of holidays when paid weekly so it can be done..it just takes longer!

Getting paid weekly is a lot better because you know that you'll have money again next week. It is easier to budget what you compared to getting your salary on a monthly basis, in which case sometimes you overspend right after receiving the money and find out later that you don't have enough to spend for the rest of the month.

Yes, I do know what you mean. I tended to have bills coming out a couple of days after receiving my monthly pay, then I could concentrate on making the rest of the money last until next month. I agree though; it was hard at times.

Weekly would be nice.
Well it depends on the individual actually and also how much that particular individual is earning,
if you are earning a lot then i dont think it would matter when you get paid weekly or monthly.
thats just the secret there.

Well getting paid weekly sounds good but I don't see many such payment methods or periods. Now getting paid monthly, for me, is better.

It seems to be in the private sector where pay is still on a weekly basis, although my brother has worked for the Public Sector for years and he gets paid weekly too, due to the outdoor nature of his job. Most Council workers get paid monthly. My husband works in the private sector and has got paid weekly for years and years. It does take a bit of juggling with his cash to pay things as they tend to come out all at the same time.

I prefer monthly payout. I am working in an industry were the monthly pay depends on many factors. The performance and quality is one of them.. then it is compared to others and many such things.. if this is done on a weekly basis things will get more complicated.

If you only have one job, then go for the weekly payment so youll have your allowance for the next week. But if you have many jobs, then go for the monthly payment so that you are 100% sure that you can save it and deposit to bank. I guess the preference will differ because of a person's needs and stability.:)

Weekly is definitely where it's at. It just makes things so much easier to deal with, especially if something unexpected like a flat tire or a hospital trip pops up out of nowhere. Plus weekly payments are easier to keep track of.
There is no worse feeling in the world than knowing you have the money you need, but not being able to get it till payday. I totally say that getting paid once a week is the most favorable option. It just seems easier for everyone.

Hello and welcome to MyLot! I must admit, I had more FUN when I was paid weekly, I think it was because it was my first job, I couldn't compare it to anything else, plus the fact I got proper money in my hand. Fancy that! It was only the 80s too, not the 50s or anything!
