My 3 kids are suffering from conjunctivitis. It started from my eldest son and he got it from his teammate. My eldest is 14 years old he can manage his sore eyes but my 2 more kids are just 5 years old and 1 year old. I cant put ointment on their eyes because they are irritated when I put it in their eyes. Until I found out some home remedies for curing the conjunctivitis and it's a cucumber. I applied a cold slice of cucumber over their eyes for about 3o minutes it reduce the itchiness and redness of their eyes. My mom told me that aloe vera is very effective in sore eyes treatment but I havent tried it.

Please be careful about what you put in the children's eyes. Eyes are the most delicate of all external organs. Cucumber slice is O.K., I think as it is an external application, but Aloe as an application to the eyeball, direct? Please ensure that it is from a trusted source. I have had conjunctivitis a couple of times and I know how it feels. It is as though I had sand in my eyes. Very bothersome even for adults. For children, extra care is needed. A visit to the local Medical practitioner may be more practical.

I have not yet tried the aloe vera. The doctor prescribed an ointment to apply on my kids infected eye but I can't put it in their eyes they keep on crying that's why I decided to search for some home remedies and cucumber is the best so far. Thanks for the advice.

The cucumber might sooth it but I really don't believe that it will get rid of it. It is highly contageous and they can't go to school or anywhere until it is cleared. The drops that the doctor prescribes not only soothe but they get rid of the bacterial infection. And they also stop the contageousness.

I am a mom and a grand mom. I personally have suffered with eye problems and so have the majority of my family at one time or another. In fact, my son in-law was not allowed in the delivery room when my grandson was born because he had an active case of conjunctivitis. However, I told him I had had tremendous success with baby shampo. An eye doctor recommended it several years ago. It is very gentle and really works. Within 2 days my son-in-law was safely holding his son. My grandson did not develop a case of this highly contagious condition. Any baby shampo will work. It is very gentle and yes, it really works.

HI misehli, If not ointment there are some OTC eye drops (antibiotics) available in the market even without doctor prescription. But my suggestion is to consult a doctor before taking any medication for your both the kids (the 5yr and 1yr old) bcoz they are very tender. Till then carry on with the home made remedies, uptill u won't do any thing wrong.

I already consulted a doctor and her advice is to apply the ointment while they are sleeping. But I will continue applying cucumber because it reduces the itchiness and redness of the eyes. Thanks!

Hello, Yes I had conjunctivitis a couple of times. It is really bad. I suffered for 2-3 days continuously. The itchiness becomes so violent at times that even sleeping becomes an ordeal. I don't remember what remedy I was given as the last one I had was a long time ago. Thanks. God bless you.

Conjunctivitis is very common now a days & from your description it seems to be acute bacterial conjunctivitis, but viral conjunctivitis is also spreading as an epidemic. So you should immediately consult with an ophthalmologist for advice & act accordingly. For children, ointment is preferred but if you find it difficult to put ointment you may also switch over to drops which will also be effective. Whatever the form of the medicine may be, you should keep in mind that for a remedy you have to use medicines. And it is more true for kids like yours. Please do not waste any time.

all you have to do is make sure that they dont use the same cloth when they wash there face and and what i used to do is put a cold cloth on there face and it will ease the soresness and then yake them to see the doc and see if they can do anthing

In order to cure conjunctivitis you need an antibiotic, so I don't think there are going to be many home remedies that work for that. Why not ask the doctor to prescribe drops instead of ointment? Most of the antibiotics used for that come as both. Seems to me it would be easier for you to put in drops a few more times a day than to not use anything at all. Also, just so you know this, conjunctivitis that is left untreated too long can affect the vision, so it seems you might want to figure out some way to get the medicine in. It will start helping after 2 or 3 days if you use it the way it's supposed to be used.

I have had conjunctivitis twice and both times I went to the doctor to get a prescription eye drop. Both times with the eye drops from the doctor it cleared up in a couple of days. I am not sure what to do if you do not see a doctor for it. I know there are over the counter drops, but i doubt those are too effective.

Cucumber is definitely good for hydrating the soft tissues around the eyes and is generally safe- be aware that some people may have an allergic reaction to aloe vera products or experience side-effects around the eyes, so consult a doctor first. In my experience, the best way to tackle conjunctivitis is to get prescription medicated eye drops as soon as possible and apply them as directed. You may also want to consider wiping the eyes regularly with dermotologically tested single-use wipes (consult a pharmacist first to make sure they are the correct type). Also, general health is important when tackling an illness, so make sure the kids get their vitamins, and if possible get some extra fresh fruit and boiled / steamed vegetables into their normal diet.
