I like watching reality based television shows and I have since I was in college. However, I also realize that these aren't really reality. There are a lot of things that we don't see that are scripted for the enjoyment of the audience and I think in some situations the winners of the competition based ones are chosen in advance as well.
So, how do you feel about reality television? Do you watch it for your entertainment or do you think that it could be real? What do you think television would be like without this genre?

Without reality shows, TV would be like 1997.
I have a couple of shows I like, Amazing Race and Survivor. I can't get into the ones that thrive on humiliating people (Japanese game show), and I've lost my patience with the romantic ones such as The Bachelor. Anyway, it's just too much time spent watching TV where I could be doing other things.

I really don't spend all that much time watching television any more. My favorite show ever was ER, but since that is gone I don't watch nearly the amount of television that I used to.

This is actually a guilty pleasure of mine.
But I too have realized that 'reality' isn't real anymore. A lot of these shows are already scripted, so I don't watch as much anymore. I did watch most of Big Brother and So You Think You Can Dance.
Last Sunday, I started watching The Amazing Race. This is the only one of the reality series that I have not missed every season. Must be my desire to travel and learn of different cultures.

I think that you could be right on that one. I absolutely love the Amazing Race and I really do think that a lot of the reason for it is because of the fact that I get to see glimpses of places that I will never have the opportunity to see in my life.

Sorry I don't watch reality shows, I think they are all fakes and just can't get into them. I watch science, history, biography, weather and some news. For instrucitons I watch classes in art, cooking, crafts.

You don't have to apologize for not watching this genre. We are all entitled to our own opinions.

I think there is way too much drama in the reality shows. I am not going to say I never watch them, because I do watch a few of them, but I definitely think they are scripted and edited to please the audience. So in fact, why do they even call them reality t.v. because it really isn't.

I tend to believe that the genre started out as being more reality based. However, I think over the course of time the genre has involved and it isn't nearly as real as it used to be.

Reality shows has become a hype these days. I'm not really fond of them but for the sake of getting entertained I watch some of them, too.LOL
I used to watch the THE BACHELOR, THE BACHELORETTE, and SURVIVOR. The latter is my favorite. Currently, there is SURVIVOR PHILIPPINES airing in our local channel. The casts are all actors from the Philippines. They claimed that everything we saw on tv were the real stuff. It could be true but I wonder what happened behind the camera. It is not difficult to believe that this kind of genre can be manipulated.
The recent star of the show THE BACHELORETTE told Ellen Degeneres that not everything we saw was for real, that some eventualities are manipulated.
TV has never been the same because of reality shows but if they don't exist, I can live without it.:)

I think that I would be somewhat upset if reality as a genre was gone. However, I really don't think that it would be the end of my television watching because there was no more reality.

The only ones that I really feel invested in are The Biggest Loser and also the Amazing Race. The reason that I tend to feel this way is because of the fact that I don't feel that they are as highly scripted.

I'm sure some of it is scripted why would it not be? I'm sure the union the writers work for would have a fit about a show that didn't have a writing staff *LOL* I know things like WWE are very obvious as to being set up. But honestly I don't watch too much reality tv, the only one I ever got into was Amazing race but I don't know if it's on anymore or when since I've started working & my kids / hubby hog the tv anyways.

Amazing Race is still on, we watched the season premiere of it last night. What I like about that show is the fact that I get to see pieces of places throughout the world that I will never see in real life.

hi I think I would like reality shows be tter if they did not show
that they scripted the whole thing and its not really reality but
acting from a script like any other kind of play. I am not really
too fond of them now.I would like to see more shows like the d angerous jobs serie as that was really neat. these were not scripted and were'
absolutely real and really interesting too.

I like watching things on Discovery like The Deadliest Catch and I also really like Dirty Jobs. My husband likes to watch Ice Road Truckers as well. Those shows are far more real than any show that we see on the major networks.

I don't watch reality television shows. About five years ago I watched a season of Big Brother and I liked it, but I've not really watched one sense. No real reason, I have seen episodes or snippets of ones like The Biggest Loser, and I do like shows that are on HGTV and TLC, but I am not sure if those can be called "reality" or more like "home improvement" type shows.
I agree a lot of the shows probably are scripted in advance, atleast snippets of it.

I'm not really sure that they are defined as reality shows, but I really do know the kind of programs that you are talking about and they are the kinds of shows that I can get easily hooked on.

i think it depends on what show you are referring to. now, 9i know that wrestling is mostly fake, because when i was a kid a famous wrestler wrote a book after he retired and i cant remember who he was. with Big brother and Survivor, i have wondered if they somehow maneuver the situation. im hoping not and i do watch BB after dark to see some of the things they cant show on regular tv but sometimes im not believing of the outcome at the end. i mean this last one was just so disappointing. and many have been.

I've never been much into Big Brother, now Survivor on the other hand, I like and have liked for almost as long as I can remember. That said, I think that Survivor is fake in many ways, but I like it none the less. My favorite, however, is The Biggest Loser and I think that there are things about it that is scripted, but I don't think that the final outcome can be scripted since it is based on the weight loss of an individual.

I watch some of it whenever I can. It's so easy to get caught up in it (sort of like a reality soap opera), but I haven't watched enough of anything lately to get addicted to any shows. I know some of it is scripted - but eh - it's entertaining anyway. Sometimes the stupidity of it makes me appreciate my life and be glad I don't have to deal with the silly drama that these reality show characters do. It almost seems like reality shows were created when they were running out of clever ideas for sitcoms and such . . . and I do think it was a good turn from the way boring sitcoms were going. But perhaps now there are too many reality shows and many people are rolling their eyes about them.

I do feel that there has been an overkill of reality television to a certain extent. There are some that I like and that I watch, and there are others that I couldn't give less about.

It depends on the ambiance of the shows... lol... =)... plus if its really shows the true character of each contestants... but a lot of times it bores me when I don't see unity in the group, so I rather sleep than watching it... Hehehehe.
God bless you.

There are a lot of times that I spend far more time on the computer than I do watching television because there really aren't a lot of shows that I particularly enjoy any more.

I don't like reality television. I never watch any of it. I think most of it is scripted or the producers deliberately put people in situations that create drama. I wouldn't be surprised if the participants in some reality shows were really actors.

I do completely agree with you that in a lot of situations the "characters" in the shows are actors. However, it is also entertainment.

That is a good point. I don't really know that all actors and actresses have studied their craft, but I do think that there are a lot of very talented ones out there.

Hi,
I think reality shows are all rubbish. I don't know when they were started being called 'reality shows'. One who has coined the name must be confessing in the church now. Those shows have little to do with the reality. I happen to see some of the shootings and I know how things are preprogrammed. The things that we consider unpredictable, accidental are actually well-thought out plots. They replace all the boring things with more exciting part. They edit it so that it is modified beyond recognition. Then the thing that is being served becomes something far from 'reality'. Thanks.
God bless you.

I agree with you. I find entertainment in them because they do remove me from reality for a time. However, I would definitely say that I don't think that they are anything like reality.

I heard a saying once that we should never believe everything we see on commercial TVs. They will do anything to have a great audience and make more money. On the other if we are talking about talent shows, I believe that they are true and the person who wins is decided by the public, so they cannot cheat because this can be verified by authorities. If we are talking about shows like Big Brother, we know that people tend to act differently when they know they are filmed. And of course they are chosen after auditions, so it cannot be said that it is really a real life event. Because in real life we meet new people mostly randomly and we are not closed up with other people who are chosen by others. So this is a question which is hard to answer because we don't know what happens behind the cameras.

You have a very good point there. I do think that there is a clear winner in both the talent type of shows and also in shows like The Biggest Loser. The other shows, though I do watch them, I don't think there is any reality about them at all.
