Will you try doing something new to save money?

We had more than 50 chairs re-upholstered by a professional but opted not to have the repaintng of the chair frames done by them because we are being quoted much higher than the upholstery for the paint job.
We plan to do the paint job ourselves and found out that we will be handling some strong chemicals--metal strippers and rust converters, to get the job done. Will you take the risk and do the job to save money or pay the professional to do the job for a steep price tag?

For me it would depend on the risk involved. If I can do the job with the same results and with little risks to me then I would do it to save money. I think in today's economy we have to do what we can to save where we can. so yes, I would do it myself to save money.

I forgot to mention that repainting the old chairs ourselves seemed to be the only viable option because if we had the job done by professionals it will turn out to be more expensive than getting new chairs.
We thought that the idea of doing the repainting ourselves will not only save us some money but also provide us with a good excuse to fellowship with the brethren while doing the job.
I just hope that more will come over to help over the weekend!

This is the first chance I got to mylot.
I just would like you all to know that the paint job for the chairs was finished two weeks ago and I think we did a good job. We now have all 57 chairs looking like they were bought yesterday when in reality they are more than 20 years old!

That's different then it makes it all the more worthwhile. Of course, you wouldn't want to end up paying more than if you bought them new as it would defeat the purpose of saving money for the church. Hope all goes well. :)

From reading the other replies, you're the exception! I may or may not choose to do something like that. If I had a job I would probably allow the professionals to do it. Now that I work at what I can at home (lack of jobs here!) I do have some time do to things like that but would take precautions with the chemicals.
Many people who are busy with work would spend more than they would with a professional if they tried to do it themselves. I definitely do everything I can to save money. The economy is so bad that every penny counts and every cent I can put into my savings account is another cent of independence when it gets worse.

This project is actually for our church and we have called for volunteers to do the repainting of the chairs. There was a good number who volunteered (enlisted) but then only 1 has actually started doing the job. I am hoping that over the weekend more people will lend a hand. You are right in saying that many are busy with other work to be able help out.
By the way, we have chucked the chemical paint stripper. It did not work! We now had to turn to the good-old-reliable-but-tedious process of sanding the metal surfaces.

Hi blungel, honestly? If that task at hand will be that hard, I would rather pay a professional to do the job rather than saving and ending up tired and not that satisfied with what I have done. If it is my profession and is in line with what I do in life, I would do it myself but if the job says that I can't do it, then I will leave it to the pro's and pay the certain amount that they deserve.

Well, it depends on what it is and how big the risk is. I wouldn't do bigger things such as try to fix things in a building that might end up costing me more in the end if I do not know how to do it, but smaller things I am fine with, and I often do them too. Like assembling things you buy, I never pay for the store to do it, but always try to do it myself, and so far, I have never had any problems!

Dependent on the risk involve.I learn from the situation that instead of saving money indeed losing money and wasted time. One concrete example of this is when I tried to do my own silk screen processing for t-shirt printing. I bought the materials but sad to say I dint have skills to succeed and indeed losing time and money.
So when opportunity knock to my door I first evaluated the risk involve. If the risk is a little less then I take the shot. At least, the risk level will be at 40 percent maximum.

Hey I never try to do anything for save money. But now I think I should open a saving account in a bank and now I want to invest money in account. Because I think if I save money then one day it will help me when I really need it. But I think it is some difficult for me because I never save money and always purchase something. So now I will try to save money.
