My main tips for a newbie would be to 1) Learn about scams and how you can spot them, so you do not waste your time with scams. This seems very hard to do in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, it is actually pretty easy, and it will save you a lot of time and money! (a rule regarding this is: If it seems to be too good to be true, it usually is) and 2) be aware of the fact that online earnings are slow. Do not expect very fast results, but if you work hard for a long time, you will start to earn, even bigger amounts. Other than that, there are many different ways to earn. Not all methods suit everyone, so the next step would be to look into the different options (some have already been mentioned in this discussion) and see what you think seems like most fun and what suits you best.
