My 10 year old daughter asked me that she like to learntyping on computer. That is a course. It cost €22 per month. I said yes. because in typing lesson we not only get typing skills, we can also learn language. one can improve his dictation(spelling) skills also. But my friends are telling that is a wast of money. Nowadays who care about proper typing. all can type with no proper method. My daughter is a bit week in spelling. what is your openion?

I am glad that you took the correct decision. I do not have a child yet, but I have realized that sitting on a PC at home and learning the typing thing is actually a very bad thing. Good for those who do not want to spend time on going to classes or otherwise. But after a 16 years experience in training students on computers, I have realized that it is always better - for both learning and growing up - that kids went to places where they could learn in a community.
When at home you are all alone, there is no competition, no one to tell you what should you do to improve. I know there are softwares (also mentioned in earlier responses to this discussion) and they would tell you where you go wrong, and things o improve, but... it is a computer after all and if the kid is smart, s/he can always skip the valuable suggestions. Not so when you go out to a class to learn. People watch you and their advice/suggestions are more acceptable to kids. I hope it is the same world out everywhere and it is not country specific.
Regards,
Sids.

I was fully satisfied with your responce. i had no words. that is why i didn't comment to your reply. i hope your words came from your own experience. As a mother i always ask me whether i am going in a right way? These sort of answers make gives me confident. I have a habit of asking openion from young people. because the world is theirs.

I think you should not be concentrated on what your friends say or do :) They could even do some crazy stuff too, that does not mean they do what is right to do... it is important what you believe in and that you try to do something to improve your daughters' knowledge. By my opinion this is not just waste of time, let her go on that classes and see what are the results - if there is no improvement she can anyway drop the classes.

Being able to type properly is a really good thing. I learned typing when I was a kid, and thanks to that I don't need to look at the keyboard as I'm writting. If I want to copy a text that I have in a paper to the computer, I take half the time than a person who can't type properly and therefore needs to look at the keyboard.
I would tell you go for it, as it will be good for your daughter

I agree with viji comments. I am a teacher at a computer school and we used a software called typing tutor or typing master. You can purchased this software online and save some money instead of enrolling your child. This software are has games and lessons from beginner type to advance typist.

Thankyou for your kind comment. I have lots of learning CDs at home. My daughter never touches them. When I let her to the computer, she likes to chatt with her friends. When she was 4 year old she used to sit on my lap and learn things as I told. very obedient. But now?????

Well, first thing first.... Your daughter is too young to learn typing but Learning Typing is what she really wants then let her do it but to certain limit of time. Coz it's not a good thing for us specially to children to spend more time in Computers than in the field playing. Who cares about spelling and the proper method of typing just download the software(Typing Master) and it will teach her how to do it.

It doesnt matter what your friends think if you think it is good and your daughter enjoys going then let her keep going as it is a activity that might come in handy later in life.It also does not matter about spelling too much it matters about the technique all though the spelling might come in handy.Once she has the basics she can quit if it is to expensive as she can build from the basics and once you learn there are lots of guides on the internet of how to get better. Also tell her to practice it atleast every night as this will help her tremendously if you want my opinion on the spellings then i think it will come when she starts too type more.

I don't think it's necessary to apply or enroll a course because there are a lot of free programs online to learn typing. All you need do is to follow their instructions and it could even be fun.
Or simply, you could buy a learning how to type book and just follow the activities there.
Why pay if you can get it for free? All you need to do is have the time and the interest to go through it and practice a lot.

If i can afford it, i don't mind spending it on my daughter for such courses...i think it will benefit her anyway and it is going to be useful for her. especially the added spelling lessons. but just make sure you're sending her to a good teacher otherwise she might not learn anything useful at all.
