Hindu Scripture Prohibits Meat Eating?

Friends I got this from another professor friend. His friend argues that there is no reference in Hindu scriptures that meat eating is prohibited. Is this true? Is there any reference in our Vedic scriptures about this?
He did some research on this and found out that, “the law of karma is equally applicable to everyone. Whether one identifies with a particular "ism" or not, the law of karma will still apply. If someone is speeding on the highway, he will be given a ticket no matter whether he is a Christian, Hindu, or atheist.
So no matter what your "ism", if you kill an animal, then you must be killed by that animal. It is stated in the sastras "mam sa khadati". This means "He eats me." This is why the word in Sanskrit for flesh is mamsa, which literally means "me he" as in "He eats me."
Whether you kill the animal yourself or you take the flesh of animal that has been killed by someone else, you are either the murderer or an accomplice to the murder. In either case you will suffer the reaction and be killed and eaten by that animal in the future. So those who want to eat meat should be educated properly so that they will understand the karmic consequences of their meat eating.
Friends, I agree with my friend’s opinion, what is your view?
Hindus don’t eat beef or pork, but goat meat and chicken. In my city tons of goat, chicken, cow, and pigs are killed and sold as meat. I eat goat meat, chicken and fish. I don’t think I am committing any sin.PLEASE KEEP RESPONSES CLEAN. We are here to share our views, not to fight.Professor

I have seen this and heard of this several times, it is because killing is seen as taking a life, and taking a life is wrong.
I wish I could live on a vegetarian diet, but sadly, I can't because of my health, but kudos to the people who can.

dear professor,
for me it is a matter of choice. i eat meat when i feel like. i eat beef but i dont eat goat meat (unless i do not know that it is goat meat). i love meat in stew with lots of vegies. i dont feel guilty eating chicken meat or fish.
other religions prohibits butchering certain animals and eating. i respect their belief.

Hi,
I spent a hell lot of time in studying the major religions. There is nothing mentioned in Hindu scriptures about eating meat. I think it's a mere personal choice. Hinduism is no feeble religion. It's less ritualistic than what we usually see around us. People may argue a lot about it, but in truth, Hinduism is far more advanced than that. Some people however, with their shallow perspective misinterpret the whole thing. To them Hinduism is mere ritualistic. As there is no reference of wearing burqua in Quaran there is no sermon on eating meat in Shrimadvagawat Gita. Thanks.
God bless you.

In my time on My Lot, I have spent some time looking into the world's religions from the point of view of the vegan or vegetarian diets. It is my understanding that all the world's religions, as originally taught & transcribed, support a vegan or vegetarian diet & absolutely prohibit the killing of any animal to gorge upon their flesh. It seems you are in a privileged position of having access to many resources & colleagues that would argue successfully in favor of adopting a more peaceful diet conducive to better results in your / their spiritual practice. I would encourage you to educate yourself fully on this issue as a matter of urgency. I'm not a student of the Hindu religion or its Holy Scriptures, though I do support it & admire it in principle. I've only briefly glanced at it, but have already found a couple of passages for your reference:
From the Manu Smriti 7:47
"Hunting, gambling, sleeping by day, censoriousness, (excess with) women, drunkenness, (an inordinate love for) dancing, singing, music & useless travel are the tenfold set (of vices) springing from love of pleasure."
From verse 50 of the same reference:
"Drinking, dice, women & hunting, these four (which have been enumerated) in succession, he must know to be the most pernicious in the set that springs from love of pleasure."
If hunting is prohibited, then it follows that no eating of an animal's flesh will result, for if there is no killing, then there would be no eating of flesh either.
As is the case with the Holy Bible, which I have argued in two of my discussions as well as my responses to those of others, I believe some of the Holy Scriptures of other religions may also be censored & edited in parts... especially those references which were in conflict with the incomes & interests of the priestly classes of the time.

Hi professor, I like your last sentence, 'we are here to share our views not to fight', and I completely agree with you. While someday none of us may eat meat, I'm sure that you aren't committing a sin. While I've always eaten meat,I'm concerned about whether or not animals are killed humanely. I care about all life and think that we should only kill when necessary and only as much as we need. Blessings.
