Friends, I have an interesting fact to share. Nowadays each one of us carries a mobile phone, and there is chance it may be stolen. But no need to be worried because each mobile carries a unique IMEI i.e. International Mobile Identity No which can be used to track your mobile anywhere in the world. This is how it works 1. Dial *#06# from your mobile. 2. Your mobile shows a unique 15 digit. 3. Note down this no anywhere but except in your mobile as this is the number that will help trace your mobile in case of a theft. 4. Once stolen you just have to mail this 15 digit IMEI No. to cop@vsnl.net 5. No need to go to police. 6. Your Mobile will be traced within next 24 hrs via a complex system of GPRS and internet. 7. You will find where your hand set is being operated even in case your No. is being changed. Also send an e-mail to cop@vsnl.netwith the following Info: Your name, Address, Phone model, Make, Last used No, E-mail for communication,Missed date,IMEI No. I am sure this information is useful for Indians. Other countries must be having similar things to do if a cell phone is lost. Please share for benefit of all mylot community Professor

Hi Professor Well I can say that you are partially right... if you don't have any tracking device installed in your phone then the only option is to have the Phone back or to trace the phone is with the help of IMEI number.. but it is not true that it will be traced in 24 hours... specially if your phone is stolen.. the thieves are now more intelligent... the only way the mobile can be traced is if it is switched on.. thieves now know this too. so they switch it on only after 3-4 months and by the time the owner or the police may have stopped searching for it.. An FIR and blocking the SIM is also very necessary..

Vijiboopathy, its not that only mobiles with gprs facility can be traced... Any mobile can be traced but you need to keep in touch with the police to track it.. and since the thieves are so well versed with this technology they can make it more difficult for the mobile to be traced.. So every thing depends on the police and the service providers, for how long they are willing to search for the IMEI number of your mobile...

that's a very useful information but i don't think we have that here. I just hope we can have that kind of phone because there are many robbers and snatchers roaming around in my city. I really hate to lose my phone.

Because I tried this number “*#06#” and then I heard one voice this numbers is not exist. So please tell me how I can find some useful information related to EMI numbers.

IMEI number is applicable to GSM mobiles. I have CDMA mobile with CDMA SIM too. When I asked the same question to CC, they provided the information. But to change CDMA SIM from one mobile to another mobile needs operator assistance. It is not same as we do in GSM mobile.

Hi Professor, I'm not sure here, in my place whether I could apply such same method as well, in case the mobile phone is stolen. Thanks for the detailed and valuable info sharing I would find out this later. If what you have mentioned above are available on my cellphone, I believe it works as well here. If so I at least could follow the steps of instruction to trace my device if unfortunately having an undesirable theft later. Yeah, it's much better than I could do nothing but nailbiting at the very moment only. It's nice to share with others such important info as well. And this is the best way to benefit cellphone users instead of those disgusting badeggs. Here in my countries nowadays there are lots of idling people with malicious intent lurking around to take opportunity to steal or to rob our cellphone Take care and happy posting

hi professor thats a really neat system. I am in the US so I do not know if we have the same protection system here. Also I have yet to buy my first cell phone. my son says I really should have one just in case of emergency I can call him from anywhere as i have his cell phone number. I imagine at least some of our American cell phone companies must have something similar in their plans as that just makes good sense.

I remember a few months ago India government banned all mobile phones which don't have an IMEI number. The people who bought phones from unauthorized local or foreign cell phone companies were in trouble. Those phones without an IMEI number stopped working after a date announced by the Indian governemnt. I remember this because my driver had a problem.

I've never explored it, how my country will do it. But once it's lost, it's lost. No traceable, no chance of ever found.

Wow, this is interesting to know! I hope this service can be available here in the Philippines soon. There are lots of cellphone snatchers roaming around, waiting for their another victim. Sometimes, you would feel sorry for the important numbers and messages stored in your sim more than you feel sorry for your unit, especially if you're a business person.

We don't have such facilities in our country yet. This must be some new technology to deter hand phones thieving. I remembered my son lost his newly purchased handphone in his office. He placed it on his table to go to the toilet. When he came back it was gone. Handphone thieves are rampant in our place. This new way of detection should be implemented here too.

This is good procedure to stop mobile theft. But I heard that, some hackers use softwares to change IMEI number too... Cost of changing to new number also very cheap. :-(
