HIV stands to Human Immunodeficiency Virus and is the virus which can lead to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
The two types of HIV both attack and destroy the blood cells which are vital in helping us fight disease and lead to a permanent condition where the body is no longer able to protect itself against viruses and bacteria. People don't actually die of AIDS: they generally die from some other disease which their body has no protection against.
