The friend of mine with the highest number of friends I've seen is about 1500. But the scary thing is he actually has met them all, they're not just random invites made online for the sake of it.

I normally encounter a problem when asking more than about 5 or 6 people in one session. Facebook normally says that to avoid spamming I can't add anymore for the minute.
It is really frustrating as if you play any of the games on Facebook, they normally require you to add friends to progress, but then you are faced with facebook putting a daily cap to stop spamming ???

Believe me, it's pretty easy for you to reach 5000, especially if you are famous enough. One of my friends even have more than one FB accounts because the first account can no longer accept friend request.
Yes, the limit is 100 per day, although I never reach that limit. I love to be added, not add. :)

I am not really sure if there is a limit or not, but have been told by members that their account gets suspended as members will complain to FB that they are being befriended by unknowns and FB considers this marketing and immediately suspends an account.
So unless the invitees are complaining there is no reason to worry. Good luck I see from you comments you have so many friends on there.

Well before not really .
You can add as many as you like.
But right now there are some restrictions that are considered so annoying by some people,
