The opposite of love is not hate but indifference. I heard the saying again on todays Oprah but have always said it myself and thought it might be a neat disscusion. I beleive this to be true, if you hate their are still feelings there but if you are truly indifferent then there is nothing left at all. What do you think about this saying.

yeah! you have a point there...isnt it sad...to think that you can love someone and gradually felt indifferent towards him...which means you totally stop caring for her. i've had that with my ex-bf...it's true, towards the end of the relationship, i dont hate him...just dont care anymore!

love - love
wow! thanks for the info:)+ I've always thought the opposite of love is hate. I'm sure most people will think this way. You are right, if you hate you sitll have feelings there...so indifferent is most probably the correct one.

ya it does make sense after you think about it for awhile, because if you hate there are still enough feelings for you to still be hurt or upset by this person but true indifference is just nothing at all and to me thats definetly the opposite of love, its just a saying that made me stop and think so i figured id pass it on and see what others thought of it

I think that's true. Indifference is the same thing as not caring anymore, and when you cease to care about a person, well that's the definition of a loveless relationship.

yes I agree too. Indifference means no feelings left now for the person while hate still means that you are still burdened by that persons thoughts. With indifference you are free and easily move on but very few of us are lucky to achieve this.

its true that most of the time we never get to that point of being completely indifferent (would make life easier if we could sometimes though) +

I read this thought in a book when I was young, and I've believed it all my life. Love and hate both mean that the person matters to you enough for you to think about them and and attach emotions to your feelings about them. A stranger, on the other hand, doesn't matter to you either way. Someone you have loved can never be a stranger to you again, of course, but the emotions fade with time, and even though you remember these people, you have no reason to think about them or care what they're doing -- thus, indifference.
